What is the Most Important Quality for College Kids?
College is a big deal! My older brother just started going to college this year. He had to move away from home and everything. I miss him a lot, but I'm also really proud of him. College must be super hard if you have to leave your family behind to go learn there.
When he was getting ready to leave for college, my parents gave him a lot of advice about how to do well. They told him to work hard, go to class, make friends, get involved in activities, and not party too much. Those all seem like good tips to me. But I've been thinking about what the most important quality is for college kids to have in order to be successful. It's a tough question!
At first, I thought being smart would be the most important thing. You have to be pretty smart to get into college in the first place. And then once you're there, you have a ton of hard classes and tests and papers to do. If you're not smart, how could you possibly keep up? My brother has always been the brainiac in our family, studying for hours and getting straight As. I could see how his smarts would really help him excel in college.
But then I remembered that my friend Jessica is in college too, and she's not quite as book smart as my brother. She had to study really hard just to get average grades in high school. Despite that, she's doing great at her university. She says the classes are challenging but she's finding ways to understand the material through tutoring, study groups, and visiting professors during office hours. So maybe being smart isn't the most crucial thing after all.
Another quality I considered is being focused and disciplined. My dad is always getting after me to stop goofing around and pay attention during my Zoom classes. He says I need to learn discipline and focus if I want to make it far in school. I can definitely see how those
would be vital skills for college. There are so many distractions and fun things to do on campus. If you can't discipline yourself to go to class, study, and get your work done, you're sure to fail out. My brother was never the most focused kid, so I hope he's learned some discipline to use in college.
Still, I know some college kids who are really focused in class but then go cut loose and party like crazy on the weekends. As long as they don't let the partying interfere with academics, maybe having some balance is okay. Too much discipline could be stifling. You need to have a little fun and take breaks too. So maybe crazy discipline isn't necessarily the most essential college quality either.
After thinking it over, I've decided that the most important quality for college determination! You need to be determined to stick with it until the end and get your degree, no matter how tough it gets. College is really hard - I already know that even though I've never been. But I see how hard my brother and his friends are working and all the stress they're under with classes, money, being independently for the first time, and figu
ring out their future careers. It would be so easy to just give up when you hit an obstacle.
But you can't quit! You have to be determined to push through any setbacks. If you struggle in a class, you have to determinedly go get tutoring instead of dropping it. If you have a fight with your roommate, you have to determinately work it out instead of moving out. If you're broke and tempted to drop out, you determinately have to take on a job or loan to cover costs. Whenever you feel like throwing in the towel, you determinedly have to remind yourself why you wanted to go to college in the first place and picture that light at the end of the tunnel - graduation!
My brother's determination has always been one of his strongest traits. When he locks onto a goal, he stubbornly keeps after it until he achieves it. That's how he became captain of the soccer team, earned his black belt, and got into his dream university despite being waitlisted at first. I have no doubt his determination will keep pushing him through any college challenges that come his way. As long as he stays determined to get that degree, he'll make it happen. I really admire that about him.
reactions to the online manage So that's my take! You can be smart, disciplined, balanced, and all sorts of other great qualities. But if you aren't determined enough to persevere, you'll never make it through college. It's just too grueling otherwise. I know I'm just a kid, but I've already learned how vital determination is in life. Whenever I get frustrated and want to give up on something, I remember how determined I have to be to make my dreams a reality, just like the college kids. After all, I have to get determined enough to be a college kid myself one day!
