How to learn our major—English wellreaction to a book or an article
With the development of economy, learning a foreign language become more and more important, especially the international language——English. As an international language, English plays an important role in modern life. As the only international language, English is actually in the service for the international communication, and as a Chinese learner of English. We are really obligated to tell the outside world what are China and Chinese culture like. Then, how do we learn English well?
Firstly, English learners must have their purpose of learning English in their mind. As English is our major, we want to improve our oral English, written English and for the purpose of tests. Secondly, we must know what level we are at. Our English was going to stay at the same level forever if we don’t keep in learning it. My English is intermediate, and I should practice more to improve it. Thirdly, choose the way to learn English according to our time and finance. As a freshman, I don’t have a busy schedule in courses. So I often spend the whole afternoon or evening without lessons to listen to the tapes. And our school provides th
e chance to study aboard for us, but most of us can’t afford it. In addition, I want to learn English by on line. There are so many English learning software and even online courses on the Internet. Generally speaking, language learning is a long and hard process and we have to concentrate on things as much as we can and make progress gradually.
My best friend pays more attention to English than me. It took her plenty time to practice her English when she was in senior school. Nearly everyday she spent not less than 2 hours in reading and writing words, sentences or even the whole article by heart. She did day after day never losing heart when meeting difficulties, even she read words articles by heart as well as she was walking or even working on something. It made me feel intimidated on others who spoke faster than I did because I didn’t take all the time I needed to think out my ideas. So I began to learn English systemically as it is my major. We were given lecture on the requirements we should meet in the coming four years. To be honest, I was aware that my past learning isn’t deadly enough and studies from that time on turned a new leaf in my life, and I got all kinds of professional training.
The first were word and grammar. To me, the English word with different letters is hard to memorize. To master a word, we should pronounce it correctly, listen to it and practice it again and again by imitation. We must learn some knowledge for word building and pronunciation rules to memorize it. And we should learn it through context and reading to know the meaning about it. We all know, the purpose of learning grammar is to help learners to have a letter understanding of the language. It is sensible to use English grammar as a tool to help us to understand and master English. So we learn rules and do some exercises to practice them.
The second were listening, speaking, reading and writing. We can improve our listening only through listening to more and there is no shortcut. We should have the right pronunciation of the words and learn to pronounce them correctly. We got no practice like this in the high school, as wasn’t included in the college entrance exam, which brought me great trouble. At first, my reaction was rather slowly. I could only catch the separate meanings of the words, but miss the required information in the exercises. Thereby, I began to change the way that I learned. I didn’t only listen to the materials, but also tried to
grasp the related information as much as I can, as I had a glance at the exercise first. With this, I could do the exercises more correctly than before. Moreover, I spent much time listening to the MP3 with all kinds of tapes, such as English songs, movies, news etc. Speaking and reading are the same important as listening. First of all, the most useful way is that we should join in all sorts of practice with high zest in and out of class. The teacher often encourages us with words: A few words is better than nothing. So we should speaking and reading anything to improve our English. I imitate the tapes again and again to improve my oral English. For instance, new concept English, I really appreciated Daniel who taught us to write wonderful. He said that we should develop a good attitude towards writing, as it’s a feeling inside our heart, and we have the desire to write for ourselves and we could develop our own ideas and opinions. I found my range of topic was narrow, and I knew that I should read more and think more in the way of English. I’m persistent in writing my journal everyday, even though they were not that long.
I try my best to improve my English and I tended to believe that I can have a good command of English so long as I work hard. We should be taken in things that we learn. Wi
thout interest, we have no dynamism to learn at all. Study itself is a long process. And we should be very patient with it, or we may feel frustrated and give up easily when we meet difficulties. Only can those good methods lead us to the right way, so we should learn English with good method that we have got. To be frank, language learning is actually a time-consuming and pain-taken process, and we still have a long way to run, but as an English major student, I will be persistent in trying hard to master it.
