Speed, Velocity，Rate speed 指物体位移或转动的速率，一般指速度矢量的大 小，而与其方向无关，是一个标量。另外，speed也指一 个运动的物体所通过的路程与其所需的时间之比，既可 以是一条直线，也可以是一条连续的曲线。speed是普通 用语，使用范围较广，如：speed of light（光速）, pointto-point speed (直线运动速度），idle speed（空转速度， 怠速）。 velocity 是正规用语，一般多用于书面语中，且一般只限于 科技上用，不宜用在其它场合。它亦指物体位移的速 率，但是一个既有方向，又有大小的速度矢量（指角速 度 时 除 外 ） 。 也 常 用 于 旋 转 运 动 （ 如 ： angular velocity角速度）、周转率（velocity of money资金 周转率)、化学反应中的反应物消失和产物生成速度。
rate 作“速度”、“速率”讲时，与velocity和speed的区别在于： rate 指在某一时间间隔内，某个量的变化除以该时间间隔 的长度，如：flow rate流率，流量，heat transfer rate 传热速率，space rate空间速度。 有时三者可以通用，如：at a good rate, with great velocity, with great speed。
