17-4 PH: The Workhorse of Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steels
Easy Machinability
When machined, 17-4 PH produces long, gummy chips.
While soft and ductile in annealed condition, it is capable of
high hardness properties with a single precipitation or aging
treatment. It can be machined in annealed condition, but
condition H1150M (i.e., the softest condition for easiest
fabrication) yields the best results. If machined in condition
H1150M, post-machining solution treatment of parts is
required prior to final hardening.

Superior Physical & Mechanical Properties
17-4 PH: Physical Properties
The physical properties of 17-4 PH stainless steel make it weldable by common fusion and resistance techniques. Among members of the precipitation hardening class of stainless steels, 17-4 PH has the best weldability. If a weld filler is required, AWS E/ER 630 is most often specified. In powder processing 17-4 PH, standard practices can be employed to facilitate good lubricant burnoff. This step prevents carburizing, which can adversely affect mechanical properties. When sintering 17-4 PH, it is necessary to use hydrogen only. Although sintering can be conducted at temperatures as low as 2050°F, higher temperatures will yield better properties.
17-4 PH: Mechanical Properties
These line graphs show the mechanical properties of 17-4 PH that was aged for 1 hour at 900°F (“H 900 condition”), which produces maximum strength. The material was lubricated with Acrawax C and compacted at 48tsi.
Sintered & Hardened in Hydrogen (H 900 Condition)
Specifications for 17-4 PH are: AISI 630, AMS 5604, AMS 5622, AMS 5643, ASTM A564 (630), ASTM A693 (630), ASTM A705 (630), MIL C-24111, MIL P-47183, MIL S-81591 and UNS S17400.
