Review 3——What Isn’t for Sale
The article titled “What isn’t for Sale” was written by Michael J. Sandel, a political philosopher at Harvard. As we know, there are some things money can’t buy in the world. But nowadays, just as the author points out, there are more and more things up for sale. According to this phenomenon, the writer made some analysis and gave insightful views on the issue of moral limits of markets.
Firstly, the author listed lots of examples, including special things for sale and some new ways to make money. The common thing they show is the logic of buying and selling no longer applies to material goods alone. These examples all seems that we are living in a time when almost everything can be bought and sold. Market and market values has come to govern our lives without any deliberate choice. Meanwhile, some moral problems caused by market triumphalism has attracted many people’s attention. Some people say the moral failing at the heart of market triumphalism was greed. And the author thinks it is a partial diagnosis.
After that, the author puts forward “why we are worry we are moving toward a society where everything is up for sale.” Then he summarizes two reasons. One is about inequality, the other about corruption. When things are up for sale, they don’t only allocate goods themselves, but express and promote certain attitudes toward the goods being exchanged. However, not all goods are properly valued in this way. The author takes our human beings as an example. Through the example of slavery and selling children, he illustrates that some good things in life may be degraded if turned into commodities. Therefore, we have to decide how to value things in proper way.
At last, the author makes a conclusion. Moral and political questions are not merely economic ones. We should drift from having a market economy to being a market society. And people should be clear where markets serve the public good and where they do not belong.
Undoubtedly, not all things can be valued by money. I show strong agreement with the author. Moral and political problems are not easily solved in the market. We should take a p
roper way when dealing with these issues. The market can not measure everything. What our society need is a good market environment as well as a responsible government.for the sale
