The County Final Exams Are Coming!
Wow, can you believe the county final exams are just around the corner? My heart starts racing just thinking about it! These exams are like the biggest deal ever for us 9th graders. All year long, our teachers have been drilling us on the material, giving us practice tests, and telling us how important it is to do well. The pressure is on!
I have to admit, I'm getting pretty nervous about the whole thing. English is definitely my weakest subject. All those grammar rules, vocabulary words, and reading comprehension passages just make my head spin sometimes. And don't even get me started on writing compositions! Ugh, putting my thoughts into words on paper is like torture.
My parents are really piling on the pressure too. Every night at dinner they ask me, "Have you been studying hard for your exams? You know how crucial these scores are for getting into a good high school next year." Yes mom and dad, I know! You've only reminded me about sixteen thousand times.
Even my little brother is razzing me about the finals. Last week I overheard him telling his friend, "My stupid older sister has to take the county exams soon. She's going to flunk for sure and get stuck going to the lousy high school across town." Gee thanks for the vote of confidence, squirt!
Despite all the stress and anxiety, I actually am trying my best to prepare. I've been going over all my notes from class, doing extra practice problems, and meeting with my English tutor twice a week. I figure if I put in the work, I'll at least pass and maybe even do pretty well.
English compositions are definitely my biggest worry though. We have to write a timed essay as part of the exam, which is pretty much my personal nightmare. I can never get my
thoughts organized in a coherent way. And you know there will be some incredibly boring prompt like "What are the benefits of reading for pleasure?" Or worse yet, "How can young people get more exercise?" I mean, could they pick any duller topics?!
sort of admit    My English tutor has been making me practice timed writings though, and giving me tips on how to structure an essay properly. She says I need a clear thesis statement, body paragraphs with specific examples and transition sentences, and a solid conclusion that restates my main points. Easy for her to say! My brain just freezes up when I Only have 40 minutes to write a whole essay from start to finish.
I actually sort of had a breakdown during my last tutoring session. I got flustered trying to write about the importance of family traditions, and I ended up rambling and repeating myself like crazy. Then I got mad, crumpled up my paper, and threw it across the room. My tutor gave me a super disappointed look and said, "Is that how you plan to act during the actual exam?" No...but the pressure is just driving me insane!
In the end though, I know I have to keep grinding away and do everything I can to prepar
e. I'll keep studying, taking practice tests, and doing timed writing drills. Hopefully when exam day arrives, I'll be ready. Or at least, as ready as I'll ever be!
If I can just get decent scores, especially in English, I'll be in good shape for getting into the high school of my choice next year. And then I'll finally be done with county exams forever! Just thinking about that idea is giving me a major sense of relief.
My friends and I have a running joke that once the exams are over, we're going to take a whole week off just to relax, veg out, and recover from the intense studying. We have it all planned - unlimited video games, junk food, movies, and absolutely zero academic thinking. Ahh, wouldn't that be glorious?
For now though, it's nose to the grindstone. I'm going to power through these last couple weeks, survive the actual exam days, and give it my best shot. Wish me luck! If all goes well with my test scores, my sights will be set on the prestigious high schools. But for now, I need to conquer this county exam beast first. Let's just hope I don't have any more emotional breakdowns between now and then!

    The County Final Exam
I can still remember that day vividly, even though it was months ago. It was the day of the dreaded county-wide 9th grade English final exam. I had been studying and preparing for weeks, but I was still a bundle of nerves.
My mom made me a big breakfast that morning to make sure I was fueled up and ready to go. Pancakes, eggs, fruit - the whole nine yards. "You need to eat up to keep your energy and focus," she said in her most motherly tone. I tried to eat it all, but I could barely get it down with how nervous I felt.
