A Trip to the Great Wall
Last summer, my family took an amazing trip to China and one of the coolest things we did was visit the Great Wall! The Great Wall is a massive stone wall that winds across the mountains of northern China for thousands of miles. It was built a really long time ago to protect China from invaders. Even though it's old, parts of the Great Wall are still standing today and people can actually walk along it. That's what my family and I got to do!
sort of things什么意思    When we first got to the Great Wall, I couldn't believe how huge it was! The stone bricks stretched as far as I could see in both directions, snaking over the tops of the tall green mountains. Our tour guide told us the Great Wall is over 13,000 miles long! That's really far - it would take months to walk the whole thing. Just a tiny part was open for visiting, but that w
as still plenty for me.
As we started hiking up the steep stone steps, I quickly realized why they call it the Great Wall. The bricks underfoot were old and a little uneven, but they had been there for centuries. I had to be careful where I stepped. The wall itself was very wide, wide enough for five or six people to walk side-by-side easily. Grey bricks formed the top surface where we walked, and the sides were made of tough granite blocks stacked incredibly high. I couldn't even see over the edges at first!
The farther up we went, the more amazing views opened up across the Chinese countryside. Lush green valleys spread out below us, with small villages clustered between the hills. I spotted tidy rows of crops being tended to by farmers wearing conical straw hats. Strange-looking cylindrical buildings dotted the landscape too. Our guide said those were watch towers that soldiers used long ago to look for enemies approaching. How cool is that?
There were so many people on the Great Wall with us that day! Families, tour groups, so
lo travelers - people had come from all over the world to experience walking on this incredible piece of history. Quite a few people were having a tough time with the climbing, especially older folks and little kids. The stone steps were uneven and quite steep in places. I saw one man take a stumble, but luckily his friend caught him before he fell. My legs started getting sore after a while from all the climbing up and down.
Along the way, there were little stands set up where you could buy snacks and drinks. Vendors were calling out, trying to sell cold water bottles or mnapnbcuos (I think that's what they called those colorful candies). Everything looked tasty, but my mom wouldn't let me have any until after we'd finished the hike. No fair!
As we climbed higher, the wall got steeper and more treacherous in some spots. I started wishing I had brought my hiking poles from home! We passed under a few tower archways and had to crouch down since they were so low and narrow. Our guide told us those were defensive garrison stationswhere soldiers kept watch centuries ago. He said archers would have shot arrows through the tiny window slits at anyone trying to attack the wall. Yikes, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that!
The highest point we reached was incredible - we could see formiles in every direction across the beautiful green hills and valleys of northern China. I felt like I was on top of the world up there! The views were just breathtaking. I made sure to take a ton of pictures to show my friends back home. My dad paid a vendor to take a family photo of all of us squinting into the sun with an amazing view behind us. That one is definitely going up on the wall when we get home!
After taking a nice break at the top to rest our tired legs, we had to head back down. Going down was almost trickier than going up in some ways! A few times,I ended up having to scoot down on my bottom because the steep steps were too tall for my legs. My dad had to help carry my little brother part of the way because his legs were too short for the big stairs. But we made it back to the bottom safely in the end.
Once we were off the Great Wall, we still had more to see and do! There were lipstick vendors trying to get my mom to buy their pretty powders and makeup. Not far away, a group of women in bright traditional Chinese dresses were singing and dancing to music th
at sounded completely different from anything I'd heard before. I bought a hand woven finger trap puzzle from one stand just for fun. Poor Dad had to lug yet another souvenir around!
