The Pursuit of Lofty Goals Requires Diligent Effort
My teacher likes to share these wise sayings with our class from an ancient Chinese philosopher named Confucius. The latest one is "功崇惟志业广惟勤" which means something like "Achievement comes from determination, and success depends on hard work." At first, I wasn't sure what it meant but now I think I understand the lesson behind those words. Let me explain it to you.
Achieving big goals and becoming really successful at something isn't easy. It takes a lot of hard work and effort over a long period of time. You can't just snap your fingers and be amazing at sports, music, art, or get straight A's in school. Big dreams like becoming a professional athlete, famous musician, gallery artist, or scientist require years and years of pr
actice, training, and studying really hard.
Let's say your big dream is to become a football star in the NFL one day. You can't just wake up one morning and be Tom Brady! First, you need to have the burning desire and determination to make that your goal. That's the "志" or aspiration part. Then you need to spend hours every day practicing football - running drills, lifting weights, watching game film, and getting coaching. That's the "勤" or diligent effort part. Over many years, that hard work and dedication can turn your dream into a reality if you never give up.
sort of things什么意思    For example, let's say your goal is to get straight A's this school year. You can't just wish for it or think "I'm smart so it will be easy." You need to have the determination and self-discipline to study hard every night, pay attention in class, do all your homework, prepare for tests, and maybe even get a tutor if you're struggling in a certain subject. Coasting by and slacking off won't get you there!
Another example is wanting to get better at drawing and art. You can't become a talented artist overnight. You need to keep practicing drawing daily, taking art classes, getting feedb
ack from teachers, and never getting discouraged when your early sketches look sloppy. The more you persevere and keep working hard on your craft, the better you'll get over time as your skills improve.
I try to apply this wise saying to my own life too. One of my biggest dreams is to become a published author and write books that kids love to read! But I know I can't just randomly put some words down on paper and have an amazing novel materialize. It will take many years of diligent writing practice, learning storytelling techniques, getting input from teachers and editors, and not getting discouraged when my early attempts are rough.
So I am determined to work hard on my goal, bit by bit. I use any free time I have to write new stories on my computer. I ask my parents and teachers for feedback to get better. I read lots of great books to learn from other authors. Some days the words flow easily, other days it's really tough and I feel like quitting. But I don't give up because I know that diligent work over a long period of time is required to become a skilled writer that kids will enjoy reading.
My friends all have different big dreams too - like becoming scientists, athletes, video game designers, doctors, engineers, and more. I tell them the same thing - if you are truly determined to achieve your lofty goal, you need to be prepared for lots and lots of hard work along the way. There are no shortcuts to greatness! You have to study hard, practice religiously, and never slack off if you want to turn your vision into reality over many years of effort.
Some kids get discouraged because they think big goals are too hard or take too long to achieve. They want instant success and fame without putting in the work. But that's not how it works! You can't become world-class at anything overnight through wishful thinking and cutting corners. True achievement requires commitment, passion, grit, and doing the hard work every single day over years and years to get a little bit better each time.
That's the wise lesson my teacher wanted to share from the ancient Chinese saying. Whether your big dream is academic, artistic, athletic, or something else entirely, the key ingredients are the same: unwavering determination to your goal, plus diligent daily effort o
ver a very long period of time. Follow that path, and you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish through hard work. But there are no shortcuts to success!
