    My Favorite Subject
School is really fun and I like learning all kinds of new things. But my absolute favorite subject is definitely English class. I love everything about English - reading stories, writing compositions, and most of all, learning new words and vocabulary. There's just something so exciting about discovering new words and being able to express myself better.
In English this year, we've read some brilliant books. My favorite was "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White. It's a story about a pig named Wilbur who is saved from being slaughtered by his friend Charlotte, a spider. I loved following their adventure and friendship. The way the author described things with such beautiful words really brought the story to life in my imagination. After reading it, I tried writing my own story using lots of descriptive words I had learned.
Our teacher, Mrs. Patterson, always encourages us to use more descriptive vocabulary in our writing. Instead of saying something is just "good", she wants us to try words like "splendid", "marvelous" or "stupendous". We keep a classroom "Word Wall" where we post up new interesting words we encounter, along with their definitions and examples of how to use them. Every week, we have a "Word Study" session where we learn and practice using the new words. It's become like a fun game for me to try to squeeze as many of the word wall words as I can into my writing!
Speaking of writing, that's one of my favorite activities we do in English class. Almost every week, Mrs. Patterson gives us a new writing prompt or topic for a story or essay. Sometimes it's fiction like: "You discover a magical doorway that leads to another world. Describe what you find on the other side." Other times it's non-fiction where we might have to write an opinion piece taking a stance on a issue, like whether kids should have more recess time. No matter the prompt, I always get really into it and my pencil starts furiously scribbling away.
I just love being able to express my thoughts and creativity through words. Putting my ideas down feels like an exciting adventure of exploration and discovery. Where will my story go? What descriptive words can I use to paint a vivid picture? I'll often get so absorbed in my writing zone that I don't want to stop when the period ends. My parents joke that they have to practically drag me away from my desk at home.sort of my superpower
English class has also really helped me with my reading comprehension skills. We often have to read passages from books, stories or articles and then answer questions testing our understanding. Was the character feeling happy or sad in that scene? What inference can you make about what might happen next? What was the main idea or lesson?
At first, some of those higher-level reading questions really stumped me. But practicing them over and over has helped sharpen my mind. Mrs. Patterson shows us tips like looking for context clues, making predictions based on evidence from the text, and always re-reading parts I'm unsure about. I feel like a little reading detective now when I attack those comprehension quizzes.
My reading skills have improved so much that I'm becoming a bit of a bookworm! I used to only want to read books with pictures and lots of illustrations. But now I can vividly imagine the whole story just from the descriptive words on the page. I've discovered so many incredible book series that I can't get enough of - Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The Borrowers. Our school library has become like a magical candy store, full of endless stories and adventures just waiting to be discovered and devoured.
That reminds me of my very favorite activity we do every Friday - D.E.A.R, which stands for Drop Everything And Read. The whole class gets to pick any book they want and then we all read silently and quietly for 30 minutes. No interruptions are allowed - we all get to drop everything else and immerse ourselves into our books. D.E.A.R time feels like being transported to another universe full of brave heroes, ancient mysteries and infinite possibilities.
When the half hour is up, I never want it to end! I always beg Mrs. Patterson for just five more minutes so I can finish the current chapter. Getting that completely uninterrupted read
ing time is gold to me. I can really concentrate and keep the whole story vividly playing out in my head, like a mini movie theater in my mind.
English class has honestly been a bit of a renaissance for me. Just a year ago, I found reading pretty boring and writing to be such a chore. If you had asked me then what my favorite subject was, I probably would have said P.E. or art. But thanks to Mrs. Patterson's passion for words and storytelling, I've done a total 180. Now I want to be an author when I grow up, creating my own captivating books that inspire minds and imaginations!
I really look up to Mrs. Patterson as an example. She always seems to have the perfect words to explain something in a simple, understandable way. Or she'll smoothly pull out a catchy rhyme or mnemonic to help us remember spelling rules or definitions. She'll do goofy voices and accents to dramatize passages from books we're reading. You can really tell English is her one true love - it's infectious!
