3. at high speed 以很高的速度
“以…速度”常用介词at
at high/top/full/slow/ordinary/low speed
at a speed of 300 km an hour
travel at the speed of light 以光速运行
speed前也可用with,常用with speed, with great speed, with all speed短语。
4. He worked as a wood carver during his early youth.
年轻时,他当过木刻工。
work as 干……工作,as为介词,意“作为”。
He first worked as a reporter for a newspaper.
他最初给一家报纸当记者。
5. Its black eyes, which are fixed on the cabbage, show the creature's interest in the vegetable.
它黑的眼睛,紧紧地盯着那棵大白菜,显示出这个小生物对这种蔬菜的极大兴趣。
Fixon/upon 把(眼光、注意等)专注于……,盯着……
She fixed her eyes on him. 她用眼睛注视着他。

leave v.“使……处于某种状态”,后可接形容词、副词、介词短语、v.-ing、-ed分词和不定式作宾补。
Don't leave the door open. 不要让门开着。
He left the light on a whole night. 他让灯亮了一晚上。
Don't leave things half-done. 别让事情只做到一半。
Who has left the water running? 谁让水一直流着?
7. In 1997, one of his paintings sold for US $ 503,000.
在1997年,他的其中一副画卖了503,000美元。
for可以表示买卖的价格,常与sell, buy连用。
I sold(bought)the shoes for 400 dollars. 我以四百元卖(买)了那双鞋子。
These are three for a dollar. 这些是一块钱三个。
I got this for free. 我免费得到这个。
Lesson 2
1. a sort of, a kind of一种
kind, sort 均有“种类”之意。kind特指某种性质相同,而且有极相似特征的东西,足以用某种方法分类并置于一起;sort常与kind同义,在口语的商业用语中更常用,还可表示轻蔑的意思。

2. quite, very
两词均表示程度,但very在语气上比quite程度强,quite比fairly程度强。
He plays quite well. 他表现得相当好。
He plays very well. 他表现得非常好。
▲在结构上,very后须修饰形容词、副词,用法较少;quite除可修饰形容词、副词外,还可修饰动词,如:I quite agree. 我完全同意。
▲修饰形容词,right, wrong, sure, possible, impossible, alone, different等表示极端状态及非等级形容词用quite,不用very。
▲quite可位于不定冠词之前,如:quite a good boy=a quite good boy
▲quite a/an意“事实上、实际上、真的(地)”。
Tom is quite a man now. 汤姆现在真算得上是个大人了。
That's quite a problem. 那真是个问题。
Lesson 3
1. a paper-cutting expert whom I interviewed
一位我采访的剪纸艺术家……
whom I interviewed是定语从句,修饰先行词expert,whom引导定语从句,代指人,在从句中作宾语,也可以省略。
本文中的定语从句还有:
something that he learned to do from an early age
Paper cutswhich date back to the time of the Northern and Southern Dynasty(386-389)!
a young farmer who wanted a wife
paper cuts which show the Chinese character
parents whose child has recently been born
2. date back to追溯到…,起始于
相当于date from,没有被动语态,一般用现在时态。
The temple dates back to the 15th century. 这个寺院建于十五世纪。
3. Mr. Chen went on to explain that there are three types of paper cuts which people still make today.
陈先生继续介绍说当今人们仍在做的剪纸有三种。
go on to do sth. 继续做另一件事情,如本句中介绍的是与上文不一样的内容。
go on doing sth. /go on with sth. 继续做同一件事情
After a rest, the old man went on telling his story.
稍稍休息一下,这位老人继续讲述自己的故事。
After a rest, the old man went on to tell another story.
休息了一下,这位老人继续讲述另一个故事。
4. They are usually put up during holidays to bring good luck.
这种剪纸常在节日里张贴,以带来好运。
put up①张贴,举起,升起
put up a notice 张贴通知
put up one's hands 举起手来
②盖(建筑物),搭(帐蓬)
put up a tent
③留宿,供以食宿
We put him up for the night. 我们那天晚上让他住了下来。
5. paper cuts used for religious purposes
用于宗教目的的剪纸
used for为过去分词短语作定语,动词短语是be used for“被用于……”,后接用途、目的。
This kind of plant can be used for eating. 这种植物可以食用。
be used as 用作,后接职业、用品等。
They are also used as offerings to the dead. 他们被用作死人的祭祀用品。
The sofa is used as a bed by him. 他把沙发当作床。
6. People to whom the dead person was related would make these offerings on special days and during festivals.
