    When I Got Really Sick
Last month, I got the sickest I've ever been in my whole life. It started on a Monday morning before school. I woke up feeling really yucky. My throat was super sore and scratchy. I had a pounding headache too. And my nose was all stuffed up so I could barely breathe through it.
"Mom, I don't feel good," I told her as she was getting ready for work. She felt my forehead and it was burning up.
"Oh honey, you have a fever. You better stay home from school today," she said. I was kind of relieved because I felt awful, but also bummed because I hate missing school.
I spent the whole day huddled up on the couch, watching TV and trying to sleep it off. But I just couldn't get comfortable no matter what I did. My body ached all over like I had been wrestling a bear. I shivered even though I was under three blankets. And I couldn't stop coughing this really nasty, phlegmy cough that made my throat feel even worse.
By Tuesday, I felt even sicker if that was possible. The fever wasn't going away and now my tummy hurt so badly too. Every time I tried to eat even just a few bites of something, I felt nauseous and like I might throw up. My poor mom didn't know what to do to make me feel better. She gave me medicine for the fever and tummy ache, but it didn't really help much.
Finally on Wednesday, my dad took me to the doctor because I wasn't getting any better. The doctor checked me all over and said I had a really bad case of the flu. She prescribed some stronger medication and told me I just needed to rest as much as possible until it passed.
I ended up missing the entire rest of that week from school, which was horrible. Being st
uck at home in bed for days on end was so boring and lonely. All I could do was sleep, watch TV, and try to keep down small sips of ginger ale or broth when I could. My energy was completely zapped and just walking to the bathroom left me out of breath and exhausted.
The worst part was the fever and chills. I would shiver and my teeth would chatter uncontrollably one minute. Then the next minute I would be drenched in sweat and kick all my covers off. It was absolutely miserable. I've never experienced chills like that before.
My friends and teachers sent me get well soon messages, which was really nice. And my mom and dad took great care of me. But I still felt so crummy for what felt like forever.
Finally after about 10 days, the fever started to go away and I slowly started feeling a little bit better each day. Getting over that flu was like climbing out of a deep, dark pit though. First I was able to keep small amounts of food down again. Then I could make it more than just a few hours without coughing up a lung. Eventually the body aches faded and I could sleep through the night.
When I was finally well enough to go back to school, I felt like I had been gone for a whole year. So much had happened while I was out sick! A new classroom gerbil had arrived, there were updates on upcoming field trips, and we had even started a new math unit. It took me a few days to get fully caught up.
While I was happy to be back at school, I still felt kind of weak and tired for a little while longer. Recess was hard because I would get winded so easily from running around. And I had zero appetite, so I barely ate any of my lunch for the first couple weeks. My teacher and parents just kept telling me to listen to my body and not overdo it.sort of和kind of的区别
Getting that flu was definitely the sickest I'd ever been. I'll never take good health for granted again! Having no energy, dealing with fever chills, throwing up everything you try to eat or drink - it's just the worst. Hopefully I don't get hit that hard by illness again anytime soon.
But if I do, at least now I know sort of what to expect and how to hopefully get through it. Drink a ton of fluids, get as much rest as possible, take all the medication, and be patient. T
he sickness does eventually pass, even if it takes what feels like forever. And it's such a relief when you finally turn that corner and start feeling little by little like yourself again.
So that's my cautionary tale about getting a nasty flu bug! Make sure to always wash your hands, cough into your elbow, get your flu shot, and do whatever else you can to avoid catching something so miserable. Trust me, you do NOT want to go through what I went through! It's an experience I'll certainly never forget.
