    My Name is Lily and I'm 10 years old. I love writing stories and poems! My teacher says I'm a great writer for my age. I really enjoy the writing part of our English exams. Some of the writing tasks are pretty fun and get me thinking in creative ways.sort of club
    Over the past couple years, there have been some new types of writing assignments on the English tests. One kind is like a storybook where you get a few pictures and have to write a little story to go along with them. These are my favorite! I can let my imagination run wild and make up all kinds of adventures and tales.
    For one exam, the pictures showed a boy finding a glowing rock in the woods. So I wrote about how it was actually a magical crystal from an ancient civilization. It had special powers and the boy got to go on a quest to return it to its rightful place. I filled it with dragons, wizard
s, and narrow escapes from danger. My teacher said she was very impressed with all the details and excitement I put into the story.
    Another type of writing is where they give you the start of a story and you have to continue it. Or they'll give you an ending and you need to make up what happened before. These are pretty fun too because you get to build off of what they provide. It's like filling in the middle part of a sandwich.
    I remember one story starter was "Ella opened the mysterious letter and couldn't believe " Then we had to explain what was in the letter and where the story went from there. I made it a secret invitation to join a club for young spies! Ella went off on a mission to uncover a criminal plot. It was full of suspense and action.
    We've also had to write descriptions of people, places, or things based on just a single picture. You really have to let your creativity flow to stretch out all the details from just one image. There was one haunting picture of an abandoned house on a hill that looked so creepy. I did my best to paint a vivid picture of its cracked walls, shattered windows, peeling
paint and ominous vibe. Describing places is one of my favorite writing challenges.
    Another task is giving our opinion and reasons on different topics. Like whether kids should have more recess time or what activities people could do to spend less time on phones and screens. We have to make a claim one way or the other and then back it up with logical arguments.
    I always try to consider both sides first on these. Like for the recess one, I said more breaks would help kids concentrate better but maybe we'd get behind on lessons. Then I pushed for why I thought the positives outweighed the drawbacks overall. Making strong cases with clear points is something I'm still working on for these opinion pieces.
    Probably the hardest writing tasks are when we have to describe processes like how to make something or how something works. These are challenging because you have to break things down into sequential steps. You really have to think through all the little details and explanations.
    On one test, I had to explain how to create a bird feeder out of common household items. I broke it down best I could like: 1) Gather your materials like a plastic bottle, string, scissors, birdseed, etc. 2) Use the scissors to carefully cut a hole towards the bottom for the and so on through about 8 steps total. The key is being super clear and not skipping over any parts.
    Sometimes we even have to write very short stories or scenes in just a few sentences using particular vocabulary or grammar that was covered. Like building a story using 5 target phrases with prepositions of location. Those are sort of fun brain teasers too.
    My favorite writing assignments are definitely the open-ended creative stories and narratives though. That's when I can channel my inner author and weave an engaging tale full of vivid settings and exciting characters. I'll keep practicing my techniques and expanding my skills. Writing is one of the best parts about learning English!

    The New Gaokao English Essays: A Kid's Perspective

    First off, let me tell you about the good old "advantage and disadvantage" essay. This one seems to be a classic! My brother has practiced writing about the pros and cons of things like social media, part-time jobs for students, and even online shopping. The key here is to present both sides fairly and then give your own opinion at the end. It's kind of like Mom asking me if I want ice cream or cake for dessert – I have to weigh the advantages and disadvantages before making my choice!
