    Winter Vacation Fun
    Last winter break was the best! I had so much fun and did lots of cool things. The vacation started on December 20th after our last day of school before the holidays. I was so excited when the final bell rang. No more classes or homework for two whole weeks!
    On the first day of break, my family and I drove up to the mountains to go skiing. It was my first time on the slopes, so I was pretty nervous. My dad rented all the gear for us - skis, boots, helmets and everything. The lodge where we got our equipment looked like a big log cabin. It smelled like hot chocolate and firewood.
    After getting our rental stuff, we went outside to the beginner hill to start learning. The instr
uctors there were really nice. They showed us the basics like how to put our skis on, get up if we fell, stop using the wedge technique, and glide down the tiny slope. I fell a few times, but it wasn't too bad with all the padding.
    By the end of the afternoon, I got the hang of skiing a little bit. I wasn't great, but I could make my way down the bunny hill without falling too much. My little sister struggled more than me. She cried a couple times when she couldn't stand up after tumbling over. Poor thing. Skiing is harder than it looks!
    The next few days, we went back up to the mountain and skied some more. I practiced on the bunny slopes while my parents and older brother tackled some of the bigger hills. They looked like they were having a blast cruising down the steeper runs. I couldn't wait until I was good enough to join them.
    When we weren't skiing, we just relaxed at the rental cabin my parents got for the week. It had a fireplace, which was perfect for heating up after being out in the cold all day. We made s'mores, watched Christmas movies, and played board games by the fire. My dad ev
en taught me how to shoot pool properly on the table in the game room.
    For Christmas that year, Santa brought me a new bike! It was an awesome BMX style with pegs on the wheels for doing tricks. I couldn't wait to start riding it.     At first, I just practiced riding around the park, getting used to how my new bike handled. The tires gripped really well on the ramps and slopes. After getting comfortable just cruising around, I started trying out some small tricks like manuals, bunny hops, and riding over little funboxes. I ate pavement a couple times when I cased a box or landed funny. Thank goodness for safety gear!
    By the end of break, I landed my first proper airtime trick - a little air off one of the smaller jump ramps! It was such an awesome feeling to get liftoff and pull off a smooth landing. I couldn't wait to keep practicing and learning more BMX moves. My mom got some cool video of me doing the jump.
    Besides skiing, bike riding, and just hanging out at home, we took a day trip into the city to visit the science museum. They had this really neat exhibit all about space exploration. I got to experience what it's like to walk on the moon in a special simulation area. We also saw real pieces of the space shuttle and moon rocks up close. Too cool!
    At the end of the two week break, I was sad to have to go back to school. But I made so many great memories over the vacation. I can't wait for spring break to have more fun adventures! Sixth grade has been a blast so far.

    Last Winter Vacation
    The winter vacation was so much fun! It started on December 20th when we had our last day of school before the holidays. I was super excited because my aunt, uncle and cousins were coming to visit us for two weeks.
    On the 21st, they arrived at our house. My cousins Sam and Emma are twins and they a
re 8 years old. I helped Mom and Dad get the guest bedroom ready for Aunt Susan and Uncle Mike. Sam and Emma were going to sleep on inflatable mattresses in my room.
    The first few days, we just relaxed at home. We watched Christmas movies, drank hot chocolate, and played games. On Christmas Eve, we went to church for the candlelight service. It's my favorite because everyone holds a candle and the whole church is glowing. After we got home, we opened one present each just before bedtime.
    The next morning, we raced downstairs to see what Santa brought! I got a new bike, some clothes, and the Lego set I really wanted. Sam and Emma got tons of toys and games too. We spent the whole day playing with our new things. Grandma and Grandpa came over for Christmas dinner. We had turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pie for dessert. It was delicious!
