    The Tallest Animal on Earth
    Have you ever seen a really, really tall animal? I'm talking about an animal that's taller than a grown-up person, and maybe even taller than two grown-ups standing on top of each other! That's the giraffe, the tallest animal on our planet.
    Giraffes are so tall that they can reach leaves and twigs at the very top of trees. Their long necks, which can be over 6 feet (1.8 meters) long, allow them to eat leaves that no other animal can get to. When a giraffe wants to take a drink of water, it has to spread its front legs wide apart and bend down in an awkward way. Can you imagine having to bend down that far just to get a sip of water?
    The giraffe's neck is not the only thing that's long – its tongue is also super-long! A giraffe's tongue can be over 18 inches (45 cm) long. That's almost as long as my arm! They use these long tongues to wrap around branches and pull off leaves to eat. Their tongues are also helpful for cleaning their own ears and eyes.
    Giraffes are covered in a beautiful coat with reddish-brown patches all over. Each giraffe has its own unique pattern of patches, just like human fingerprints are all different. Their long legs are also spotted, and they have two rounded horns on their heads called ossicones.
    Even though giraffes are so tall, they are gentle giants. They spend most of their time eating leaves high up in the trees, using their long necks to reach the tastiest snacks. When they want to run, they move in a funny way, almost like they are bouncing along. But don't let that bouncy movement fool you – giraffes can run really fast if they need to, up to 35 miles per hour (56 km/h)!
    One of the coolest things about giraffes is how they sleep. Since their necks are so long
and heavy, they can't just lie down flat like many other animals. Instead, they have to sleep standing up! They'll bend their long legs a bit and rest their chin on their chest or back to catch some Z's. Sometimes a group of giraffes will take turns sleeping so one of them can stay on the lookout for predators like lions.
    Giraffes live in the savannas and grasslands of Africa. They travel in small groups called towers, and stick close together to watch out for each other. Baby giraffes are called calves, and they are around 6 feet (1.8 m) tall when they are born! Can you believe a newborn baby is already taller than most humans? After just a few hours, the calf can already stand up and start walking. Growing up to be an adult giraffe takes time though – it can take 4-5 years before they reach their full height of up to 19 feet (5.8 m) tall!
    I think giraffes are one of the most amazing animals. Their long necks, long tongues, and incredible height make them so unique. Next time you see pictures or videos of these gentle giants, remember how special they are as the tallest animals roaming the Earth. Isn't it awesome that animals this tall even exist? I sure think so!

    The Tallest Animal on Earth
    Giraffes are the tallest animals in the whole world! They are so tall that even an adult human could walk underneath the belly of a full-grown giraffe without bending over. Just imagine how awesome it would be to stand next to one of these giants!
    Giraffes use their incredible height to their advantage. Their long necks allow them to reach leaves and branches high up in the tops of trees that other animals can't get to. This means giraffes never have to compete for food with animals on the ground. They can just stretch their necks up and munch on all the tasty leaves they want!
    Even though they are so tall, giraffes actually have the same number of vertebrae (or neck bones) as humans do - just 7! But each of the giraffe's neck vertebrae is really long and stretches its neck way up high above its shoulders. A giraffe's neck alone can be 6 feet long! That's taller than most adults.
    Giraffes need those long necks and legs for reaching tall trees, but their height does cause some problems too. When they want to get a drink of water, giraffes have to splay their front legs apart and bend way down in an awkward split position. It's pretty funny to watch, but useful for them to be able to reach the water and get their big bodies down for a drink.
    Their long necks are made extra strong by a special ligament called the nuchal ligament that runs along the vertebrae to hold the neckup and prevent it from flopping all around. The nuchal ligament attaches at the top of the shoulders and the back of the skull. It's what allows giraffes to bend their necks down when needed, but still hold that super long neck upright normally without using much muscle effort.
    In addition to their iconic long necks, giraffes have other unique features that help them survive. Their tongues can grow up to 18 inches long and are purple-bluish in color! The long tongues assist giraffes in grasping leaves and pulling them into their mouths from high branches. And the tough tongues have bony surfaces that allow them to pull leaves from branches covered in thorns without getting poked or hurt.
