What Do I Want to Be When I Grow Up?
Ever since I was a little kid, my parents have been asking me "What do you want to be when you grow up?" It's a question all kids get asked a million times. When I was really little, I would give the typical answers like "A fireman!" or "A doctor!" or "A superhero!" As I've gotten older though, my ideas about my future career have changed quite a bit from what my mom and dad probably expected.
My parents both have pretty typical jobs. My dad works in an office doing something with computers and numbers. My mom is a teacher at the local elementary school. I think they always just assumed I would end up doing something similar - an office job making decent money or maybe becoming a teacher myself. Those careers are perfectly fine, but they just d
on't seem to fit my personality and interests very well.
You see, I'm what they call a "creative type." I love drawing, painting, acting in school plays, writing stories, and just letting my imagination run wild in general. Anytime I have an assignment at school that allows me to exercise some creativity, I go all out. My parents are always saying things like "That's our little artist!" or "You've got quite the imagination, don't you?"
So it probably won't come as a huge surprise that the career I'm leaning towards is something in the arts and creative fields. Specifically, I'm really interested in animation and visual effects. Everytime I watch a Pixar movie or see the cool CGI in a Marvel movie, I find myself staring in awe at how incredibly life-like and detailed the animated characters and effects look. It seems like such an amazing combination of art and technology.
I've started teaching myself some basic animation skills by taking online tutorials and messing around with some free software. Just being able to make a simple bouncing ball move across the screen was so satisfying! I have a long way to go to get to Pixar-level of c
ourse, but I'm hooked. This is what I want to dedicate my career towards.
When I finally worked up the courage to tell my parents about my aspiration to be an animator or visual effects artist though, their let's just say "less than thrilled." My dad started going on about how careers in the arts are an "unreliable path" with "no job security." He thinks I should pursue something more "stable" like business, engineering, or medicine.
My mom didn't say much initially, but I could tell she was disappointed. She's a very pragmatic, realistic person. A few days after I told them, she sat me down and explained her concerns. She said careers in animation and special effects are extremely competitive. She worried that even if I was really talented, I might struggle to find a good job that could support myself, especially when I'm first starting out. She also expressed doubts about my ability to stick with such a "demanding" career path for the long-term.
I understand where my parents are coming from. They are looking out for my future and want to make sure I'll be able to have a stable career that can provide for me financially. Th
e entertainment industry is certainly very competitive and being a visual effects artist is hard work. There's no guaranteed path to success.
At the same time, I feel like I need to follow my passion. Doing something you absolutely love and are truly committed to has to count for something, right? I'm willing to put in the hard work required because creating amazing animated movies and visuals is my dream. It's what gets me truly excited and motivated in a way that more "stable" careers like business or law just don't.
My parents and I have had several discussions about my career aspirations at this point. I've tried to be open-minded to their concerns while still standing firm in my ambition. I've researched the job prospects and academic paths to prepare for a visual effects career. There are good programs and entry level jobs available, even if it takes perseverance. I've promised them that I'll have a backup plan and be smart about planning my finances. Mostly though, I've begged them to have faith in my abilities and drive to make this dream a reality.
The conversations are ongoing, but I can sense my parents are slowly coming around, even if they still have some lingering doubts. My dad begrudgingly admited that the VFX industry is a legitimate career path nowadays. My mom seemed impressed by my determination and preparation, even if she's still a bit worried about the challenges.
I know they both want me to be happy and successful above all else. As long as I keep working hard, learning as much as I can about VFX and animation, and showing them my passion and talents, I'm confident they'll offer their full support eventually. Then I'll be one big step closer to making my dream of creating the next incredible animated movie a reality!

My Future Dream Jobsort of career翻译
Ever since I was a little kid, I've known exactly what I want to be when I grow up - a zookeeper! I love animals more than anything in the whole world. My bedroom is covered
with stuffed animal toys and posters of lions, tigers, and bears. I can spend hours watching nature documentaries learning about different creatures' habitats and behaviors.
