    The  Beijing 2008 Olympic  Torch  Relay（火炬接力）
The Olympic flame(奥运圣火)  arrived in Beijing on March 31. The host city for the 2008 Olympic Games started a ceremony（仪式） in Tian'anmen Square on that  morning to welcome the Olympic flame from Greece and kick off an international torch relay.  China's President Hu Jintao used the torch to light(点燃) a cauldron(圣火盆) , and passed it on to China's world champion hurdler, Liu Xiang, 1.then he declared(宣布)  the Beijing 2008 Olympics torch relay begun. It was the start of the Olympic torch relay. Inside China, the torch relay is going to pass through 21 cities  over more than 30 days. The relay is  expected to last 130 days and covers a distance(距离) of 137,000  kilometres, passing through 19 countries, finally the flame will arrive at the National Stadium in Beijing on Aug 8,2008 for the opening  ceremony.
      With its theme（主题）, “Journey of Harmony”, and its slogan （口号）2.“Light the
Passion, Share the Dream” , 3.the 2008Olympic Torch Relay will be an opportunity for BOCOG(北京奥申委) to  share its Olympic message with the world.

Liu Xiang was the first Asian to win the men’ s 110m hurdles(跨栏) at the Olympic
Games in Athens. After that he became an idol to the young people.
    When Liu Xiang crossed the finishing line far ahead of the other players, In a world record ---------12.91 seconds, It was Liu's first Olympics and he won the gold medal. He said “I think today we Chinese have showed the world we can run as fast as anybody else."
When Liu was a grade four student in a primary school, he was chosen by the Junior Sports School of  Putuo District in Shanghai to practice jumping. But when a bone test showed he would not become a tall man, Liu was asked to give up  practicing.
  After one year although he had won the national championship for his age group. Liu' s parents also wanted him to give it up and study more at school, but Liu decided to  continue practising jumping.
      In 1998 when Liu Xiang, aged 15 met the famous coach Sun Haiping, his career  changed greatly. Sun believed Liu Xiang was a rising star and after visiting Liu's parents several times, finally he persuaded them to let Liu practice the 110m hurdles.
After Liu got the gold medal, he  became well known all over the world. But Liu thinks 2004 is the beginning, and he  expects to be at his peak in the summer games in Beijing in 2008. Liu Xiang said, For some players, it s just a job. For me, it ‘s what I love.

In 2004, Chinese athletes gained 32 gold medals. It was the historical  record. Among them there were some medals that we never got before. For example, women’s double tennis we never expected to enter the final match. The athletes gave our Chinese people a big pleasant surprise .
    Another big surprise is from a young man named Liu Xiang who gained a gold medal in the 110-meter hurdle  race. In the race there were many famous sportsmen. Liu beat them and won the race.
