23 The political and content background:
The story happened in 1947. In that age, the society was black and lack of the fairness of the judicial system.
Banker Andy wanted to kill his wife and her lover after drinking because his wife was having an affair. However, before he did something, the coincidence is somebody shot his wife and her lover in the night.  He was accused of murder, and also was sentenced to whole life imprisonment, which means he would spend the rest of his life at the Shawshank prison. So the film is about what was happened on Andy mentally and physically at the Shawshank prison

Theme
1. The film can simply described as a prison-break story.
A banker named Andy is convinced of murdering his wife and her lover, based on strong circumstantial evidence. He is sentenced to two consecutive life sentences at Shawshank State Prison. During his time at the prison, he made friends with Red.
Red is imprisoned as a young man he has almost been entirely institutionalized. He has co
nnections on the outside who can acquire contraband for the inmates, from which Andy got a rock hammer.
The warden is a very religious man; he created a scheme to use prison labor for public works, undercutting the cost of skilled labor and discretely receiving personal kickbacks for it. He has Andy launder the money under a false identity, in exchange for allowing Andy to keep his private cell and to continue maintaining the library.
After preparing for 17years, Andy escaped through the tunnel and a narrow sewage drain during a thunderstorm. Red obtained his parole and travelled to Mexico. Finally, they two are happily reunited on the beach to begin a new life.
The Shawshank Redemption is an allegory for maintaining one’s feeling of self worth when placed in a hopeless position.
2. Hope----Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.
Freedom----Some birds are not meant to be caged, that’s all. Their features are just too bri
ght.
3. Friendship----Happiness is when the need of sincere friendship, especially in time of trouble.
Redemption----It takes a strong man to save himself, and a great man to save another.
Conflicts
I. Intrapersonal
A. Red
1. Desire for freedom. He has asked to get out for 40 years.
2. Fear of freedom. When he gets out, he finds it is terrible things to live in fear. All he does anymore is to think of ways to break his parole, so maybe they’d send him back.
B. Brooks50years
1. In here, he is an important man, an educated man.
2. Outside, he is nothing. Red: These walls are kind of funny like that. First you hate them, and then you get used to them. Enough time passed, get so you depend on them. That's institutionalized.
C. Warden---Norton
1. “I believe two things: discipline and the bible. Here you will receive both. Put your trust in the lord. Your ass belongs to me.”—actually it is kind of conflict in his mind.
2. He put up the sentence on the wall which said “His judgment cometh and that right soon” .It seems that he support the charity. He looks kind. He seems to be a fair judge. He stands for fair and just.
3. He asked the prisoners to work for him free of charge in order to help him collect money. He lets Andy launder dirty money for him and even killed Tommy for his own good.
