On the teaching of English for science and Engineering Majors

As an important basic course, professional English course focuses on the teaching of professional English knowledge, professional vocabulary, scientific and technological grammar [1-2]. Through the study of this course, students can independently complete the transition from basic English to professional English, independently read professional related literature and technical materials, and write simple professional papers, Lay a solid foundation of professional English for students to successfully complete their graduation thesis and future employment or further study.
1、 Problems in professional English Teaching
Professional English teaching is different from other professional courses in terms of teachin
g language environment, teaching hours (shorter), and teaching focus on the English expression of professional knowledge, which brings some problems to professional English teaching. Taking the course of "English for polymer materials and Engineering" as an example, the following situations generally exist in practical teaching [3-5]. Firstly, students' basic English level is uneven, which brings difficulties to professional English teaching. Professional English is based on general English, while the English foundation of the students in the local colleges where the author is located is generally poor, and it is also difficult to understand and master a large number of professional vocabulary, professional terms, derivatives and long difficult sentences. It is difficult for students to have a benign interaction between teaching and learning with teachers, low interest and initiative in learning, and have a sense of frustration. Secondly, the content of the textbook "English for polymer materials and Engineering" is old, the subject matter is single, and the students have a weak sense of gain in limited class hours. Finally, the conventional teaching method of reading the full text of the textbook and translating sentence by sentence emphasizes "teaching" and ignores the student-centered "learning". After the course, the students' readi
ng, writing, listening and speaking abilities of professional English have not been significantly improved, and the teaching effect is not good. To solve the above problems in professional English teaching and improve teaching quality, we need to "suit the remedy to the case". "Symptoms" can be summarized as students' weak basic English level, and the traditional "cramming" teaching method does not conform to the essence and internal law of learning, resulting in students' lack of learning enthusiasm and sense of acquisition. Combined with the thinking and practice of personal teaching, the author discusses and puts forward the methods and means to improve the quality of professional English teaching, and gives the "medicine" for "disease".
2、 Methods and means to improve the quality of professional English Teaching
(1)Consolidate the foundation of students' general English and improve the level of general and professional English at the same time. The author found that most students have a poor foundation of general English in the process of teaching, which is reflected in the insufficient amount of English vocabulary, the poor mastery of some common fixed coll
ocations, preposition combinations and polysemy of one word, and the insufficient ability to analyze complex sentence structures. Professional English based on general English belongs to a higher application level, but the foundation is not solid, how to talk about application. Therefore, in daily teaching, we need to spend some time to strengthen students' English foundation, and can combine relatively simple professional English expression to eliminate students' sense of distance from professional English and improve their learning confidence. Take the following sentence as an example, "polymer materials can be used in plastics, fiber, rubber, coating and activities." This sentence not only reviews the fixed collocation of usedas, but also learns professional vocabulary such as polymer, plastics, fiber, rubber, coatings and adhesives. Although the sentence is simple, students can get twice the result with half the effort. In addition to providing teaching materials or some simple professional English examples created by teachers, carefully designed and targeted homework, such as vocabulary dictation or complex sentence pattern division, can effectively consolidate basic English and professional English knowledge. At the same time, students are encouraged to express professional English orally or in writing based on
general English in class, so as to consolidate general English and improve professional English through creative learning.
(2)Integrating fragmentary vocabulary in professional English and systematic and thematic teaching. A large number of professional vocabulary, terms and derivatives in professional English are the biggest obstacle for students to understand the semantics of professional English. Although the Chinese interpretation of professional vocabulary is given at the back of each text in the textbook, it is not ideal to master it only by teachers' explanation in class or students' preview before class. This is mainly caused by the class hours and the objective reasons that students can allocate limited learning time. Although there are a large number of professional vocabulary and terms in professional English, there is no rule to follow in learning and mastering. According to the internal relationship and logical relationship of professional vocabulary [6-7], teachers can summarize, sort out, summarize and supplement the professional vocabulary and terms scattered in each chapter, and then divide the professional vocabulary into monomer polymer naming, polymerization method, polymer structure (near / remote structure, condensed structure) Pr
operties (including solubility, mechanics, heat, electricity, etc.), processing and molding methods, etc. list related words and their derivatives for systematic learning. For example, in the study of aggregation methods, we can take the word polymerization as the center, construct the logical thinking map as shown in Figure 1, and use the logical relationship of professional knowledge to strengthen the memory of professional vocabulary and phrases. Teachers can guide students to construct the logical thinking map of vocabulary for other topics and strengthen the learning and memory of professional vocabulary. Compared with chapter by chapter vocabulary teaching, special vocabulary learning is affirmed by students and the teaching effect is better. This is mainly due to the fact that the method of special vocabulary learning can better reflect the subjectivity and creativity of students' learning and conform to the learning law.
