篇1
Hi everybody! My name is Emma and I'm a 3rd grader. Today I want to tell you all about my experience with the 3rd grade language arts and English composition courses this year. It's been a real adventure, let me tell you!
In language arts, we've been learning so many new things about reading, writing, and communicating. At the start of the year, I was a little nervous because there's a lot of new material compared to 2nd grade. But my teacher, Mrs. Johnson, is really nice and makes the lessons fun.
One of the first big units was on grammar. I learned all about nouns, verbs, adjectives, and those other word types. It was kind of confusing at first with all the new vocabulary. But we did lots of practice activities that helped it stick. My favorite was this game where we had to s
ort words into the right categories. Whenever I got one right, I got to move my game piece. It was like Candyland but educational!
The writing assignments were tough at the beginning. In 2nd grade, we just had to write simple sentences. But now we're learning how to construct whole paragraphs. Using topic sentences, details, and conclusions. Mrs. Johnson has this cool graphic organizer that looks like a hamburger. The top bun is the topic sentence, the patties are the details, and the bottom bun is the conclusion. It really helped me visualize how a paragraph should be structured.
We also got to do some creative writing. One of my favorite stories I wrote was about traveling to the moon. I had to use lots of descriptive words to paint a picture in the reader's mind of what it would be like. Things like the rocky lunar surface, stars twinkling in the black sky, and that cool looking moon rover. I worked really hard on that one and Mrs. Johnson said my descriptions were "out of this world!" Get it? Because it was about the moon? Sorry, I just couldn't resist that one!
In reading, we've been working our way through lots of great books and stories. We just finished the "Henry Huggins" series, which I loved. Henry is such a funny and mischievous character. Although I don't think I'd want his neighbor's dog Ribsy to come rampaging through my home like he did to the Huggins'! We had to write book reports analyzing the themes, character motivations, and our own personal opinions on each book. It was the first time breaking down novels like that, but I actually had fun with it.
As for English composition class, that's where we're really learning all about writing essays, papers, and stories in English. I have to admit, English gives me a bit more trouble than my regular language arts class that's taught in my native language. All the grammar rules are different and there's a lot of new vocabulary to memorize.
But I'm working really hard because I know English is an important skill to have in our globalized world these days. My parents say being bilingual will give me a huge advantage later in life. So I'm sticking with it even though it's challenging at times.
The very first thing we did was go over basic sentence structure. Things like putting word
s in the right order, using subjects and verbs properly, and making sentences negative or interrogative. We did tons of practice drills and worked through example after example on the whiteboard. Honestly, it started to get a little tedious and repetitive. But I know it's building a really solid foundation.
Once we had the basics down, then we moved into writing simple paragraphs just like in my language arts class. First making an outline with our main ideas and supporting details. Then turning that into complete paragraphs with good structure. I've definitely gotten better at organizing my thoughts before putting pencil to paper.
Earlier this year, we also learned about different types of writing styles and genres. Things like narratives, descriptive essays, persuasive writing, and more. Each genre has its own techniques and conventions that you need to follow. It was fun experimenting with the various styles to see which ones suited me best.
I'd probably say that narratives are my favorite type so far. I love being able to use my creativity and imaginations to craft an engaging story. For my last narrative assignment, I w
rote this crazy tale about a young wizard-in-training who accidently turns her grandfather into a frog. It had lots of funny moments and exaggerations to get some laughs. Although I did have to be careful about using proper grammar throughout.

Having a clear thesis statement, developing supporting points, and tying it all together coherently is hard work. I've had to really concentrate and take my time outlining and drafting these bigger essays. But I'm proud of the progress I've made so far.
