Activity 1 Read this advertisement that was posted by a famous British explorer and discuss the following questions with your group members.
1.What doessmall wagesmean?Do you think there could be many people who would work hard but not caring much about wages?Why?
2.What is the meaning ofbitter coldhere?What kind of men do you think could overcome the bitter cold?
3.What kind of men was Ernest Shackleton looking for?Use your own words to describe them.
4.If you saw an advertisement like this,would you like to join the expedition?Why or why not?
Suggested answers:
1.Small wagesmeans very low salary.Definitely many people who don’t care much about money and pursue their dream of adventure will apply for the job.
2.Bitter coldmeans extremely cold or freezing cold.The person who must be fit and adapt to the extreme weather conditions could overcome the bitter cold.
3.He is looking for men who were not interested in money or comfort,but in honour and achievement,which can’t be bought.
4.I would like to join an expedition like this.Although it would be extremely tough,the sense of achievement I would get from doing it would be worth it.I don’t think I could get the same feeling from anything else.
