Unit 2 Environmental Protection
Section A Listen to the conversations and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.
Conversation One
W: Do you understand why the local people are opposed to the new dam up the river?
M: They are worried about the potential danger if the dam should break. The river is very wide above the proposed site.
Q: What do we learn from the conversation?(C)
Conversation Two
W: I really enjoy the TV special about the United Nations Environmental Summit last night. Did you manage some time to watch it?
M: Oh yes and I have never thought that I could stay up so late to watch a debate on such a serious topic.
Q: What does the man mean?(B)
Conversation Three
W: These summer days are getting to be more than I can take. It was even too hot to go to the pool yesterday.
M: You have to face the reality. According to the weather report we cant have any relief for the rest of the week because of the impact of global warming.
Q: What does the man imply?(B)
Conversation Four
W:I finally understand that Giant Pandas don’t hibernate because bamboo can’t provide the fat they need in winter.
M: Things are getting worse in their homeland where bamboos grow into maturity slowly and used heavily by human.
Q: What does the man imply? (B)
Section B  Listen to the dialogues and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.
Dialogue One:
W: Hi Professor Smith. I hear you’ve written a book titled The Endangered Giant Pandas.
M: Yes. It explains why the national treasures are China at stake.
W: Could I ask you some questions concerning the book?
M: Sure.
W: What are some of the reasons you cover in your book?
M: The first reason is that Giant Pandas have a very short low reproductive rate. They have a short mating season when females will have only one or two cubs a time.
W: Are there any other reasons? sort out the facts
M: Another reason is habitat destruction. China has over 1 billion people. The huge population continues to explore more farms and build more cities and use more natural resources. As a result pandas lose their homes and are forced to move to the mountain regions.
W: Are these all the reasons?
M: Of course not. The last reason is hunting. When hunters set snares for other animals such as musk deer the traps kill giant pandas instead.
W: What a pity. What can we do to save the species know as living fossils?
M: There’s much we can do. Actually global joint efforts have already been taken. This will not only increase the number of the giant pandas but also ensure their future survival.
Q1. What is the dialogue mainly about? (C)
Q2. Which is not the reason why Giant Pandas endanger?(C)
Dialogue Two:
M: Today I'm interviewing nine-year-old Alex about her feelings on how people can help save the environment. So Alex how can we save the environment?
W: By saving water.
M: Well how can we do that?
W: By not using too much water when we wash dishes take a bath and when we do other things like watering the plants outside.
M: Oh I think I can do that. What else?
W: When drinking or eating something outside you should keep the garbage until you find a
trashcan to put it in because littering makes our planet dirty. Do you like seeing trash all over the ground?
M: No I don't. Do you have any final suggestions?
W: Yes. We shouldn't waste paper because trees are being cut down to make the paper. By recycling paper we save the forests where animals live.
M: So how can children recycle paper I mean everyday?
W: Well for example when I was in kindergarten I used to save the newspapers so that I could make things make out of them like paper trees instead of just throwing them away. Now the children in our neighborhood collect newspapers once a month to take them to a recycling center.
M: That's great. Well thanks Alex for your ideas.
Q1: What is the dialogue mainly about?(D)
Q2: According to Alex why is it important to recycle paper?(D)
Section C Listen to the passages and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.
Passage One
How many times have you ignored the phrase "reduce reuse recycle"? What we need this Earth Day is a change in mind set. If you were to think of the Earth as your body for example you'd probably take better care of it. You'd want to wear less garbage. You'd want to smell cleaner. And if trash were fat you'd definitely want to trim it.
