My School: Five Years Ago and Five Years from Now
My name is Emma, and I'm a 5th grader at Oakwood Elementary School. I've been going to this school ever since kindergarten, so I've seen a lot of changes happen over the years. It's crazy to think about how different things were just five years ago, and even crazier to imagine what my school might be like five years from now!
    Five Years Ago
Back when I was in kindergarten, my school looked and felt really different. The building itself was pretty old and kind of run-down. The paint on the walls was chipped in a lot of places, and the floors were all scuffed up. The playground equipment was ancient and rusty, and there were only a couple of swings and a really old slide.
We didn't have any computers or tablets in our classrooms either. All of our lessons and activities were done with pencils, paper, and old textbooks. We had to line up and go to the computer lab once a week to use those big, clunky desktop computers. They were so slow, and half of them didn't even work properly.
sort something out
At recess, we only had kickballs, jump ropes, and chalk to play with. There were no fancy gamecourts or anything like that. We just had to make up our own games in the field or on the blacktop.
The cafeteria food was pretty gross too. It was all mushy, bland, and came in those weird-looking plastic trays with the different sections for the main dish, veggies, and dessert. I remember a lot of kids would just throw most of it away.
Things are so much better now! Over the past few years, our school has gotten a major upgrade. They did a huge renovation project and made everything look brand new.
    Now
These days, my school is bright, colorful, and looks amazing. The walls are freshly painted, and the floors are shiny and clean. We have fancy new playground equipment too, with cool climbing structures, swings, and even a zipline!
Every classroom has its own set of tablets and computers that we use for all kinds of lessons and activities. We can watch educational videos, do interactive assignments, and even code our own simple games and programs. It's so much more fun and engaging than those old textbooks.
At recess, we have a huge variety of things to play with. There's a basketball court, a soccer field, tetherball courts, and even a running track. We've got tons of balls, hula hoops, and other toys to use too.
And the cafeteria food is actually pretty good now! They have a salad bar, a sandwich station, and lots of healthy options like veggie wraps and smoothies. No more of those gross plastic trays with the weird-looking food slopped into the different sections.
It's been amazing to see how much better my school has gotten over just the past few years. But I can only imagine what other crazy changes might happen in the next five years as I get ready to go to middle school!
    Five Years from Now
If the past is any indication, my school is going to look and feel like something out of a science fiction movie by the time I'm in 5th grade! I wouldn't be surprised if we had hologram teachers or robots helping out in the classrooms. Maybe we'll have virtual reality headsets instead of tablets for our lessons!
The playground could be this huge, mind-blowing play space with anti-gravity jumping areas, climbing holograms, and interactive video game obstacles. How cool would that be?!
I bet the cafeteria will be able to print out any food we want using some wild 3D food printer thing. We could get freshly printed pizzas, tacos, ice cream sundaes, you name it! No more pre-made meals or lunch ladies needed.
Who knows, maybe we'll even have jet packs or hovercrafts to get around the school instead of just walking! Okay, maybe that's a little too far-fetched. But the way technology is going, I wouldn't be that surprised.
The one thing I really hope never changes is how nice and caring all of my teachers are. No matter how fancy the school gets with its technology and facilities, having great teachers who make learning fun is the most important thing.
I feel so lucky to be a student here at Oakwood Elementary. It's been incredible to see how much it's changed and improved already, and I can't wait to see what other amazing things are in store over the next five years. This place just keeps getting more and more awesome!
