    Yay! It's Time to Learn About Garbage Sorting!
    Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I'm a 4th grader. Today I'm going to tell you all about this super cool garbage sorting activity we did at my school. It was so much fun and I learned a ton of important stuff!
    A few weeks ago, my teacher Mrs. Johnson told us that we were going to have some special guests come talk to our class. I was really excited because special guests usually means we get to do something different and fun instead of just sitting at our desks all day. When the guests arrived, I saw they were from the town recycling center. "This is going to be good," I thought to myself. I love learning about recycling!
    The first guy started talking and said his name was Mr. Park. He told us that recycling and sorting our trash is sooooo important to help take care of the planet. He said when we don't recycle and just throw everything into one big trashcan, it gets taken to these huge holes in the ground called landfills. But landfills are getting really full and we're running out of space! Plus, a lot of that trash sits in the landfill for thousands of years without breaking down, yuck!
    But there's good news, Mr. Park said. If we sort our garbage into different bins for recycling, compost, and true trash, we can reuse and renew a lot of those materials instead of filling up the landfills. How cool is that? I couldn't wait to learn more.
    Next, Mr. Park's friend Ms. Claire took over. She showed us these giant colorful posters of the different bins we should use. There was a green bin for compost like fruit and veggie scraps, a blue bin for recyclables like plastic bottles and cans, and a black bin for anything else that is just total garbage.
    Ms. Claire handed out pictures of random trash items, one for each of us. We had to look
at our picture and decide which bin it should go in - green for compost, blue for recycle, or black for landfill. Then we walked up to the front of the class and tossed our picture into the pretend bin we picked. I got a picture of a banana peel so I put it in the green compost bin. Simple!
    After we sorted all our pictures, Ms. Claire went over what we got right and wrong. I was proud that I got mine correct. But I definitely learned that some things I thought could be recycled actually can't, like pizza boxes because they have food stains. Those have to go in the compost bin instead of the blue recycling bin. Good thing I know that now!
    Then we watched a video about what happens at the recycling center after our recycling bins get picked up. The recyclables get sorted by cool machines into different materials like plastic, glass, aluminum, and paper. Then those materials can be used to make new products instead of making more new plastic, aluminum, etc. from scratch. It was so fascinating!
    Finally, the guests had us take a "Recycling Pledge" to promise we'll try our best to alwa
ys sort our garbage at home and at school. We put our handprints on a big poster to show we want to take care of the planet. I'm really going to try hard to always recycle and compost instead of throwing everything in the trash!
    At the end, Mr. Park told us if everyone sorts their garbage properly, we can massively reduce how much trash ends up in landfills. Landfills are really bad for the environment and sorting our trash is an easy way we can all be eco-heroes. Doesn't that sound awesome?
    I had so much fun at the garbage sorting activity and learned why it's so critical that we all do it. My parents were really impressed when I got home and could teach them about recycling the right way. Now I make sure I always separate out our compost, recycling, and true trash at home.
