Technology and My Relationships
Hi there! My name is Timmy and I'm 10 years old. I love tech stuff like video games, apps, and coding. But I've also learned that technology can affect my relationships with family and friends in good ways and bad ways. Let me tell you about it!
Video Games and Family Time
One way technology impacts my relationships is through video games. I loooove playing games like Minecraft, Roblox, and Mario Kart. The games are so much fun and I can play for hours and hours. But sometimes Mom or Dad has to set a time limit because I get too absorbed in the game world. When that happens, I get grumpy and don't want to stop playing. That leads to fights and everyone gets upset.
Mom says too much gaming means we don't spend quality time together as a family. She's right - I'd much rather keep playing games than go on a family hike or have a board game night. But after I take a break from the games, I realize how much I missed that family bonding time. Technology can be an unhealthy obsession if I'm not careful.
Social Media Struggles
Another example is social media. My parents let me use kid-friendly apps like Messenger Kids to chat with my friends and cousins. It's awesome being able to send silly memes, videos, and pictures back and forth. But sometimes my friends say mean things on the app group chats that really hurt my feelings. They'll make fun of how I look or call me names just as a joke. I try to brush it off but the comments really sting.
My mom noticed I seemed down and I finally told her what was happening on the apps. She explained that people can say meaner things hiding behind a screen than they would in person. She made me take a break from those group chats for a while. I was mad at first, but I realized she was right that the negativity was bringing me down. Tech lets us share ou
r lives but also gives a dark space for bullying.
Missing Out While Online
I've also missed out on real-life fun because I was too focused on my iPad or gaming. One time, my grandparents visited from out of town and I could barely pry my eyes away from my game. Instead of enjoying that rare family reunion, I gave my relatives the cold shoulder while battling zombies in an apocalypse world. Grandma and Grandpa were pretty hurt that I wasn't interested in their stories and snuggle time. I felt awful afterwards for being so rude.
Another time, my friends came over and we all had our devices out, not really talking or interacting much. Instead of making fun memories together, we were all Zombies scrolling through TikTok and YouTube. Those are times I'll never get back - times we could have been running around outside, telling jokes, and playing classic games like Tag or Hide and Seek. Looking back, I wasted so many opportunities for human connection because I was transfixed by a screen. Technology robbed me of being present in the moment.
On the
Don't get me wrong though - technology has also helped me connect with others in amazing ways! During the pandemic lockdown, I was able to use video chat apps like FaceTime to keep in touch with grandparents, friends from school, and far-away relatives. Without that tech, I would have felt very isolated and alone. Video calls were a lifeline to my loved ones when we couldn't meet up in person.
I've also been able to collaborate with my classmates on cool projects using Google Docs, Slides, and folders to upload our work. My friend Jaden and I worked together to code a simple computer game that we were really proud of. All those tools let us create something rad as a team. My coding club friends and I also use gaming chats like Discord to strategize around new gaming levels and challenges. Tech brings us together over shared interests in a really fun way.
Finding Balance

So in the end, I've learned that technology and my relationships aren't all good or all bad. They go hand-in-hand in today's world. Tech lets me express myself through games, videos, art, and coding - which I love! But I have to be careful not to let that consumption get in the way of real human moments with family and friends. If I'm not careful, the games and apps can become an obsessive addiction that hurts my relationships.
The key is finding the right balance. Tech should be a side hobby, not my entire life. I need to schedule plenty of quality time for people and activities away from a screen. When I'm with loved ones, I put my phone on silent and keep it out of sight so I can be fully present. At home, we have screen-free dinners to reconnect as a
