The Scary Side of Too Much Screen Time
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm a 4th grader at Oakwood Elementary School. These days, it seems like every kid has a smartphone or tablet that they're always looking at. I've even seen little kids who can barely talk already swiping on their parents' phones! While technology can be really cool and fun, I've learned that spending way too much time on our phones and devices isn't good for us at all. There are some pretty scary dangers to overdoing screen time that all kids should know about.
The first big problem is how bad too much phone use is for our eyes and vision. Have you ever noticed how after playing on your phone or tablet for a long time, your eyes feel really strained and tired? That's because the bright screen lights can cause a lot of strain and dryness for our eyes when we look at them for too long. Doctors say this can lead to problems like headaches, blurred vision, and even nearsightedness (when you can't see things far away clearly)!
Spending hours upon hours glued to our phones can also really mess up our posture and give us body pains. Think about how you're always hunching over and slouching when you're looking down at your phone screen. Staying in that position for a long time causes strain on your neck, shoulders, and back muscles. No wonder so many kids complain about neck and back pain these days - it's from all that mobile phone hunching! Ouch.
Another yucky effect of too much screen time is that it can really mess with our sleep. The bright lights from our phone and tablet screens actually confuse our brains and make it harder for us to feel sleepy at bedtime. Doctors recommend avoiding screen time for at least an hour before bed so our bodies can start making the sleep hormones we need to fall asleep easily. Not getting good sleep can make us feel grumpy and have trouble paying attention at school the next day.
Perhaps the scariest danger of all is how addictive our smartphones can become. Scientists have found that the apps, games, videos, and social media stuff on our phones actually release chemicals in our brains that make us want to keep looking at them over an
d over again for longer periods of time. It's kind of like how some adults get addicted to things like gambling or alcohol - except it's an addiction to our phones! An addiction like that can really take over your life if you're not careful.
So what can we do to avoid all these scary side effects of too much phone time? Well, the big thing is to have limits and balance. Maybe you can make a rule with your parents to only use your phone for less than an hour per day, except for homework and calling your family. During that phone time, take breaks frequently to look out a window or go walk around for a bit - this helps reduce the eye strain. And of course, absolutely no phones for at least an hour before bedtime!
