My School Five Years Ago and Now
Wow, has my school changed a lot in just five years! It's crazy to think back to when I was a little first grader and how different things were back then. From the playground to the classrooms, the whole school looks and feels so different nowadays.
One of the biggest changes is the playground area. Five years ago, we just had a couple old swing sets, some monkey bars, and a small basketball court. It was kind of boring and there wasn't much variety. But a couple years ago, the school did a huge renovation of the playground.
They took out all the old equipment and installed really cool new stuff. There's this aweso
me huge climbing structure that kind of looks like a castle. It has bridges, tunnels, climbing walls and poles - it's like a jungle gym on steroids! There are also several different swing set areas, including one just for the little kids with these cute animal-shaped swing seats.
My favorite part of the new playground is the spinning cup thing. It's kind of hard to describe, but basically there's this huge cup-shaped bowl that you can spin around really fast while standing inside it. It makes you feel like you're getting launched into outer space! Just thinking about it makes me dizzy.
In addition to the new playground equipment, they also redid all the ground covering. Instead of just boring old woodchips, they put down this really cool squishy rubber surface that has a neat pattern almost like a maze. It makes the playground feel softer and safer.
The classrooms inside the school building have changed a ton too. Back in first grade, the classrooms looked so old and drab. The desks were these beaten up old particle board things, the walls were just covered in those gross cork tileboards, and the lighting was really dim and glary from the old fluorescent tubes.
Now the classrooms look bright, clean and modern. They got rid of the old desks and replaced them with these ergonomic desks that can adjust between sitting and standing positions. The walls are painted nice calming colors like sky blue or mint green instead of just having those yucky cork boards. And they installed new energy efficient LED light panels that give off this really clean, natural-feeling light.
Probably the biggest upgrade in the classrooms though is the technology. When I was in first grade, we were still using those ancient SMART boards that didn't even work half the time because the projector would burn out or the software would freeze up. We only had maybe 5 or 6 outdated desktop computers for the whole class to share.
These days, every classroom has an awesome state-of-the-art interactive touchscreen panel that's like an enormous tablet. The teachers can write on it, pull up websites and videos, or let students interact with lessons right on the screen. We don't have to mess around with dumb projectors or terrible software anymore.
And it's not just the big touchscreens - we also each have our own personal laptop that t
he school provided. They're loaded with all the latest software and learning apps that we can use for doing work, taking tests, or just practicing skills. No more having to crowd around those old clunky desktops!
Another area that's super different is the cafeteria and lunch. Five years ago, the cafe was pretty gross with these ugly long tables and benches that always felt dirty. And don't even get me started on how bad the food was back then - just thinking about those greasy chicken nuggets and soupy canned vegetables makes me want to puke!
But a couple years ago they did a total makeover of the cafeteria space. Now it has a really modern, open concept with high ceilings and big windows that let in lots of natural light. Instead of those nasty benches, they put in really cool round tables and comfy chairs. The whole place just has such a nicer vibe now.
And thankfully the food is way better too! The school started contracting with a company that specializes in kid nutrition using natural, less-processed ingredients. The menus are much more varied with lots of different cultural cuisines. Some of my favorite new lunches a
re the veggie stir-fry, the jerk chicken with pineapple salsa, or the Indian chana masala over basmati rice. They even have a salad bar and vegetarian options daily.

Those are just a few of the biggest changes, but there are lots of other smaller things that have improved too. Like they renovated the library to have these awesome new reading nooks and study rooms. The art room got an amazing upgrade with new potters wheels, a kiln, and tons of supplies. They even redid the front entrance and front office area to make it look more welcoming.
