    My Best Friend Wants to Learn Chinese and English
    Hi there! My name is Michael and I'm 10 years old. I'm in the 5th grade and I love playing soccer, reading comics, and hanging out with my best friend Pedro. Pedro just moved to my town from Brazil and he doesn't speak much English or Chinese yet. But he really wants to learn both languages so we can communicate better!
    Pedro is the nicest kid ever. He's really funny and always has this big smile on his face. I've been trying to teach him some basic English words and phrases, but it's pretty hard. Same goes for the little bit of Chinese I know - he just looks totally lost when I say stuff like "nǐ hǎo" or "xièxiè." The languages are super different from Portuguese.
    My mom says the best way for Pedro to learn is by using dictionaries. Dictionaries are really awesome books that translate words between different languages. You can look up English words to find out what they mean in Chinese, or vice versa. There are even pictures and examples to help you out.
    At first, I didn't think dictionaries would be much fun. I figured they were just long lists of boring vocabulary. But my teacher, Mrs. Lee, showed us how dictionaries can actually be really cool! She brought in a bunch of different ones for us to check out during our English and Chinese lessons.
    One dictionary Pedro and I looked at was all in English, but had both the English and Chinese translations side-by-side. That one is perfect for when Pedro wants to say something in English, but needs to know how to pronounce the Chinese equivalent. The pronunciations are written out in a special alphabet so it's easy to sound out the words.
    Another dictionary we saw was images only - no words at all! You could look up a picture of like, a dog, and it would show the Chinese characters and English word for "dog" right th
tablet press punch and dieere. Mrs. Lee said those kinds of visual dictionaries are awesome when you're first starting to learn a new language. The pictures help your brain make connections between the words and the objects they represent.
    My personal favorite dictionary was this huge English-Chinese one that was just packed with SO much information. Not only did it have words and their translations, but also tons of example sentences. And there were these cool cultural notes about stuff like idioms, common phrases, and traditions. Flipping through that book made me feel like I was unlocking the secret codes to English and Chinese!
    Some of the other kids thought the dictionaries seemed boring, but not me and Pedro. We thought they were fascinating! Running your finger across the pages, looking at all the funky letters and symbols, finding that one word you didn'it was like a treasure hunt. Except the treasure was knowledge about a whole new language and way of communicating.
    Pedro took a ton of pictures of the dictionary pages with his tablet so he could reference
them later. He's already trying to learn some simple vocabulary, like colors, numbers, and common objects around the house. I'm attempting to learn right along with him - that way we can practice together!
    I really want to help Pedro feel as comfortable as possible with English and Chinese. He's my best bud and I don't want the language barrier to stop us from being able to chat, joke around, and talk about our favorite games or movies or whatever. Thanks to those awesome dictionaries Mrs. Lee showed us, I think we're going to be able to smash through that barrier no problem!
    Who knows, maybe after Pedro gets the hang of English and Chinese, he can start teaching me some Portuguese. Then we'll have our very own secret language that only we understand! How cool would that be? We could make up codes, tell jokes, and basically operate on another level that no one else is privy to. Except my mom, because apparently she took Portuguese in college and is "fluent." Whatever mom, you're still not invited to the club!
    I'd obviously let my mom join our multi-lingual inner circle. Especially if she bought us some more of those rad dictionaries to aid in our language learning quests. The more tools and resources we have in our treasure-hunting arsenal, the faster we'll become experienced polyglots roaming the city, talking up a storm in every possible tongue.
    That's the dream, anyway. For now, it's one footstep at a time with these amazing dictionary sidekicks by our sides. Baby steps, one word after another, until slowly but surely,那个词什么?, "O que é essa palavra?" won't be mysteries anymore. They'll just be questions Pedro, myself, and our mom lingual mentors Meryl can answer like that.
    So let's punch in those dictionary definitions, amigos and start mixing languages like a linguistic rock salad! The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single bien plus alpha-beta-gamma, right? Or something u know what I mean. Study hard, keep those dictionaries close, and P-man and I will be fluent in no time! Well, maybe not fluent yet, but you get the idea. Vamanos!
