When Toad realized that he was a prisoner in this terrible jail, he lay down on the floor and cried for a long time. He wouldn't see the sunlight for twenty years. He felt awful.
One man worked at this jail. He brought the prisoners their food and drink. The jailer was unkind to Toad. Luckily, however, his daughter felt sorry for him. Her name was Phoebe. She helped her father in the prison and brought Toad his food every day. She thought he was just a little animal and his crime wasn’t so bad. He hadn’t killed or hurt anyone. She thought it was terrible that Toad had to stay in jail for twenty years.
“Perhaps I can help you to escape, " Phoebe said. “My aunt who is a washwoman and she does the washing for all the prisoners here. I think for a little money she will let me bring in some of her dress and bonnet. You can put them on and pretend to be her. You are very alike in many aspects—particularly about the figure.”
“Me!” exclaimed Toad. “Me, the Great and Famous Toad, dressed in a washwoman's clothes! Oh no. I'm much too important to do that. ”
“Do you want to get out of prison or not?” Phoebe asked.
Honest Toad was always ready to admit himself in the wrong. “You are a good, kind, clever girl,” he said, “and I am indeed a proud and a stupid Toad. Introduce me to your worthy aunt, and I have no doubt that the excellent lady and I will be able to arrange terms satisfactory to both parties.”
Phoebe kept her word. The next day, she arrived with her aunt, who brought a basket of clothes. They dressed Toad in the clothes. They hid Toads face under a large hat.
