春节(The Spring Festival)英文介绍
The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation systems of about half a month from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees.
Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid 1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, the most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days. The Chinese government now stipulates people have seven days off for the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Many customs accompany the Spring Festival. Some are still followed today, but others hav
e weakened.
On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, many families make laba porridge, a delicious kind of porridge made with glutinous rice, millet, seeds of Job's tears, jujube berries, lotus seeds, beans, longan and gingko.

After the Preliminary Eve, people begin preparing for the coming New Year. This is called "Seeing the New Year in".
Store owners are busy then as everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year. Materials not only include edible oil, rice, flour, chicken, duck, fish and meat, but also fruit, candies and kinds of nuts. All the door panels will be pasted with Spring Festival couplets, highlighting Chinese calligraphy with black characters on red paper. The content varies from house owners' wishes for a bright future to good luck for the New Year. Also, pictures of the god of doors and wealth will be posted on front doors to ward off evil spirits and welcome peace and abundance.
The Chinese character "fu" (meaning blessing or happiness) is a must. The character put on paper can be pasted normally or upside down, for in Chinese the "reversed fu" is homophonic with "fu comes", both being pronounced as "fudaole." What's more, two big red lanterns can be raised on both sides of the front door. Red paper-cuttings can be seen on window glass and brightly colored New Year paintings with auspicious meanings may be put on the wall.
People attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. At that time, all family members eat dinner together. The meal is more luxurious than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd cannot be excluded, for in Chinese, their pronunciations, respectively "ji", "yu" and "doufu," mean auspiciousness, abundance and richness. After the dinner, the whole family will sit together, chatting and watching TV. In recent years, the Spring Festival party broadcast on China Central Television Station (CCTV) is essential entertainment for the Chinese both at home and abroad. According to custom, each family will stay up to see the New Year in.

春联属于楹联的一种。楹联分为春联、寿联、挽联,门联、厅联、庙联,名胜联、商业联、游戏联等多种形式,而春联只是楹联其中的一种。所谓楹联,就是挂在或贴在堂屋前的廊柱或门框上的上下相对的联语,因此,楹联也叫对联。这种对联是由两串字数相等、互相对仗,而且具有一定内涵的独立文体,就是说,对联的上下联字数不限,但必须相等,内容要有意义,平仄要合律,对仗要工整。凡符合这些条件的都是对联,否则就算不上对联。
楹联是中华民族特有的一种源远流长的文学形式。它最初起源于桃符。桃符是中国古代挂在门框上的,画着或刻有避邪图形或字迹的两块桃木板,桃符早在秦汉以前就出现了,当年中国民间每逢过年,就有在大门的'左右悬挂画着或刻着降鬼大仙神荼、郁垒桃符的习俗。
那么为什么桃木能避灾驱邪呢?根据中国古代神话《山海经》的记载,远古时代有座山是个鬼的世界,叫鬼域。在这个鬼域门口,有棵大桃树,树冠能覆盖三千里,在树上生活着一只金鸡,负责每天的报晓,每当清晨金鸡啼叫的时候,夜晚出去游荡的鬼魂就必须赶回鬼域。在鬼域的大门两边站着两个神人,名叫神荼、郁垒。如果鬼魂在夜间干了伤天害理的事情,神荼、郁垒就会立将它们捉住,用绳子捆起来,送去喂虎,因而所有的鬼魂都畏惧神荼、郁垒。这样在民间就流传开用降鬼大仙神荼、郁垒和桃木驱邪、避灾的风习。他们用桃木刻成神荼、郁垒的模样,或在桃木板上刻上神荼、郁垒的名字,挂在自家门口,用以避邪防害。这种桃木板被称做桃符。
