The Incredible Chinese New Year
My favorite time of the year is the Chinese New Year! It's a massive celebration that lasts for weeks and has so many fun traditions. I can't wait to tell you all about it.
The Chinese New Year is also called the Spring Festival. It marks the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. The date changes every year, but it's always sometime in late January or February based on the lunar cycle. This year it fell on January 22nd.
The celebrations actually begin weeks before the new year itself. My mom starts cleaning our house from top to bottom to sweep away any bad luck from the old year. We put up bright
red decorations with lucky symbols like fu (fortune) because red is considered a very lucky color in China. My grandma always gives me a few dollars in a red envelope for good luck too.
One of my favorite traditions is watching the incredible New Year's Eve TV show put on by China's biggest television network. It's like a massively long concert and comedy show rolled into one. The biggest stars and performers take the stage to sing, dance, and crack jokes for hours on end. I stuff myself with dumplings and snacks as I watch it every year with my family until the wee hours of the morning.
When midnight finally strikes, we open all the windows and doors to let the new year in. Then we light strings of firecrackers that pop and crackle like crazy to scare away any evil spirits! The air is filled with smoke and the crackling sounds echo down the streets. It's such an exciting atmosphere.
spring怎么读中文什么意思 New Year's Day is just the start though. For the next couple weeks, we visit all of our relatives and close friends. We eat absolutely tons of delicious food like dumplings, noodles,
fish, and my favorite - nian gao (sticky rice cakes). Eating nian gao is supposed to lead to a very sweet and prosperous new year.
We also watch impressive dragon and lion dances performed in the streets, parks, and shopping centers. The dragons are formed by a team of dozens of dancers holding up this colorful, undulating dragon costume. The lions are the same concept but they leap and dance around to rhythmic drum beats. They move their heads, arms, and bodies in such energetic, acrobatic ways. One time a lion dancer even plucked a lettuce leaf right out of my aunt's hands with its giant mouth!
My dad always makes sure to take me to a different temple each year during the New Year too. We light incense sticks, make offerings of fruit, and pray for good luck and health in the new year. The temples are packed with crowds of people doing the same thing. There are huge hanging lanterns everywhere and the smoke from all the incense fills the air with a sweet, calming aroma.
In the days leading up to the Lantern Festival, which marks the end of the New Year cele
brations, we decorate our local park by hanging up colorful paper lantern displays. I love the rabbit-shaped ones the most. On the evening of the Lantern Festival itself, we light the lanterns, eat tang yuan (sweet rice balls), and watch incredible fireworks displays and folk dances. Some families even do a dragon dance with their own miniature paper dragons.
The weeks of the Chinese New Year are my favorite time of every year. The vibrant red colors, the delicious foods, the fireworks, and all the exciting performances and traditions make it such a festive and happy occasion. I always look forward to what animal's year it will be next and getting to celebrate with my family all over again. Isn't the Chinese New Year just the best?

The Chinese New Year - A Wonderful Time of Year!
The Chinese New Year is my favorite time of the year! It's a huge celebration in my family and it lasts for several days. I look forward to it for months before it arrives. There are so many fun traditions and exciting things that happen during this special festival.
First, there's all the preparation that takes place in the weeks leading up to New Year's Eve. My mom and dad spend a lot of time deep cleaning our whole house from top to bottom. They want to sweep away any bad luck from the old year and make way for good luck in the new year. We decorate our home with bright red lanterns, couplets with lucky phrases, and papercut-outs of the zodiac animal for the upcoming year. One year it was the ox, another the tiger, and this time it's the rabbit!
