    The Four Seasons Are Awesome!
I love the four seasons we have here - spring, summer, fall, and winter. Each one is so different and special. Let me tell you about the cool things that happen in each season.
Spring is when everything starts waking up from the cold winter. The trees and flowers begin growing new leaves and blossoms. It's so pretty to see all the colors coming back after the dull browns and grays of winter. My favorite spring flower is the tulip - they come in so many bright, cheerful shades.
One of the best things about spring is all the baby animals being born. I love watching the lambs, calves, foals, and other babies gamboling about and playing. Some of them are a bit
wobbly at first on their new legs! Spring also means the return of many birds that flew south for the winter. Hearing their chirping and songs in the morning is like nature's alarm clock.
The warming temperatures bring chances for fun spring activities too. My family likes to have picnics at the park once it's nice enough. We play frisbee, fly kites, or just run around on the new green grass. April showers do make for muddy puddles, but splashing in those is half the fun!
Summer is probably the season kids look forward to most because there's no school! We get to stay up late, sleep in, and spend long days just playing and relaxing. Summer is hot and sunny, perfect for swimming, going to the beach or lake, having water balloon fights, and running through sprinklers.
One of my favorite summer traditions is the 4th of July fireworks show they have every year. I love the bright, colorful explosions lighting up the dark night sky. Some of them even look like smiley faces or mushroom clouds! The loud booms make me jump though. My dog Buster doesn't like them at all - he hides trembling under the bed.
Another great thing about summer are all the fresh fruits and vegetables that become available. My uncle has a huge vegetable garden and we get to eat corn, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, and more - often picked the same day. The sweetness just can't be matched by store produce. And who doesn't love watermelon and strawberries on scorching summer days?
Fall is a season of changes, but they're all beautiful ones in my opinion. The leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow before falling off the trees. My brother and I love jumping into big piles of raked leaves and burying ourselves! Our cat Cleo likes to stalk and pounce on the ones that skitter across the yard in the breeze.
Fall is definitely the messiest season, but in a fun way. We make mud pies and leaf angels when playing outside. Halloween is my absolute favorite fall event! Getting to dress up as anything you want, go trick-or-treating for candy with friends, and attend parties with games and spooky decorations? Sign me up!
The crunch of leaves underfoot and the crisp, fresh autumn air smells amazing. My famil
y always goes to an orchard to pick apples, drink fresh cider, and get pumpkins for carving. Mom makes the most delicious pies, tarts, and other baked treats with all our harvests. There's nothing cozier than cuddling up with a warm mug of hot chocolate on a chilly fall evening.
Then winter arrives with a hushed stillness, blanketing the world in shimmering white snow. Every tree, house, and surface looks clean and pure after a fresh snowfall. Making the first footprints or snow angels in an untouched area is my favorite. I also love catching snowflakes on my tongue - no two are ever exactly alike!
Wintertime opens the door for so many fun cold-weather activities. My friends and I go sledding every time there's a good hill and enough powder. A couple years ago we even built an epic snow fort with tunnels and lookout towers! We had an epic snowball fight against the neighborhood kids that went on for hours. Despite rosy cheeks, runny noses, and frozen hands, we kept right on playing until our parents called us in for hot chocolate.
I also love ice skating at the outdoor rink downtown. The first few laps are shaky while I r
egain my "ice legs," but soon I'm gliding along backward and doing spins like a pro. Well, maybe not a pro, but you get the idea! When it's really frigid, my little sister and I head inside for indoor games like building Lego cities or creating arts and crafts. The house smells so good from all the baking and simmering comfort foods that Mom makes.
Every few years we even get enough snow for the entire neighborhood to work together building a giant snow sculpture in someone's yard. One year it was a snow dragon, another time it was a snow castle. We kids spend hours shaping and sculpting while our parents make frequent cocoa/coffee runs and hand out tools. It becomes this fun group project and point of pride for everyone who helped.
