The Day of Clear and Bright  Du Mu
清明时节雨纷纷,Around Clear and Bright showers are so frequent;
路上行人欲断魂.Wayfarers on the road feel despondent.
借问酒家何处有,Tell me, Buffalo boy, is there a tavern somewhere:
牧童遥指杏花村.The lad pointed to a hamlet with blossoming apricot trees way down the road.
Day of Clear and Bright: the first day of the fifth solar term according to the Chinese lunar calendar; a day devoted to visiting ancestors’ graves.
沁园春雪
to the tune of Chin Yuan Chun   
February 1936 
North country scene: 
A hundred leagues locked in ice, 
A thousand leagues of whirling snow. 
Both sides of the Great Wall 
One single white immensity. 
The Yellow Rivers swift current 
Is stilled from end to end. 
The mountains dance like silver snakes 
And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants, 
Vying with heaven in stature. 
On a fine day, the land, 
Clad in white, adorned in red, 
Grows more enchanting. 
This land so rich in beauty 
Has made countless heroes bow in homage. 
But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti 
Were lacking in literary grace, 
And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu 
Had little poetry in their souls; 
And Genghis Khan, 
Proud Son of Heaven for a day, 
Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched 
All are past and gone! 
For truly great men 
Look to this age alone.

昔日戏言身后意,Predictions we made in jest,
今朝都到眼前来. Bout our sunset years have mostly come true as domestic scenes.
衣裳已施行看尽,I’ve given away all your clothes but didn’t have the heart
针线犹存未忍开.To open bundles of your unfinished needlework.
尚想旧情怜婢仆, The servants you hired have been well treated,
也曾因梦送钱财.and dreams of you have prompted me to send tin-foil money.
诚知此恨人人有,These things happen all the time.
贫贱夫妻百事哀.But without money or power, Couples like us have few bright spots in life.
Tin-foil money: Paper “money” burnt for dead persons to spend in the nether regions.

大道直如发,The High Road is as straight as an arrow.
春日佳景多.On a spring day pleasant scenes abound.
五陵贵公子,Elegant young men from Kings’ Tombs come out two and two,
双双鸣天珂.Trotting their horse with tinkling jade bridles.
Kings’ Tombs: Upscale residential location in Luoyang.

Spring Comes to Jiangnan  Du Mu
千里莺啼绿映红,Red against green, and a huge troupe of warblers singing;
水村山郭酒旗风.Hillside, riverside hamlets, with blue flags fluttering^^
南朝四百八十寺,The Southern Dynasties had four hundred eighty Building temples;
多少楼台烟雨中.How many towers and terraces are wrapped in misty drizzles?
Blue flags: Wine shop sighs.
The Southern Dynasties: Refers to the six dynasties installed between the downfall of the Han Dynasty in 200 A.D. and the reunification of China in 589 A.D. Nanjing was the capital of the successive dynasties.
