    Chinese Festivals and Traditions
    Hi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm going to tell you all about some of the cool festivals and traditions we have in China. Get ready to learn about yummy foods, fun activities, and interesting stories!
    Chinese New Year
    This is probably the biggest and most exciting festival we have. It lasts for 15 days, but the biggest celebrations happen on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Weeks before, my family starts cleaning our home from top to bottom. We want to sweep away any bad luck and make room for good luck in the new year.
    On New Year's Eve, we have a huge reunion dinner with all our family members. My grandma makes dumplings, noodles, fish, and other delicious dishes. After dinner, I get a red envelope filled with money from my parents and grandparents. How cool is that?!
    At midnight, we light firecrackers and watch fireworks to celebrate the new year's arrival. The firecrackers are super loud but really fun! For the next two weeks, I don't have school and get to sleep in late every day.
    I love Chinese New Year because it's a time for my whole family to be together. We visit relatives, watch lion dances and acrobat shows, and eat lots of amazing food.
    Lantern Festival
    This festival happens on the 15th day of the new year and marks the end of the New Year celebrations. My favorite part is seeing all the beautiful lanterns! People hang up lanterns everywhere, and there are huge lantern displays too.
    The most fun activity is trying to solve the riddles written on the lanterns. If you guess a ri
ddle correctly, you get a small gift or treat. My friends and I love walking around at night, looking at the lanterns and thinking up the answers.
    Another popular tradition is eating sweet rice balls called tangyuan. The round shape represents unity and being together with family. We also go out and admire the full moon, which is very bright and pretty at this time of year.
    Dragon Boat Festival
    Get ready for boat racing and zongzi! The Dragon Boat Festival happens in the 5th month of the year. It started a long time ago to honor a famous scholar and poet named Qu Yuan.
    The highlight is definitely the dragon boat races. You have a whole team rowing together in a long, narrow boat decorated like a dragon. It's so cool to watch them paddle furiously down the river while beating drums!
    We also eat lots of zongzi, which are pyramid-shaped rice dumplings wrapped in bambo
o leaves. My favorite fillings are sweet bean paste or savory pork and mushrooms. Yum! I'm getting hungry just thinking about them.
    According to tradition, we hang up pictures of Zhong Kui, a mythical figure who drives away evil spirits. That way no ghosts or monsters can bother us during the festival.
    Mid-Autumn Festival
    This one is all about the full moon, mooncakes, and being grateful for a good harvest season. It usually happens in September or October when the moon is at its brightest and roundest.
    Leading up to Mid-Autumn, my mom buys lots of dense, sweet mooncakes filled with lotus seed paste, egg yolks, nuts, and sometimes even ham or chicken. Each little cake is stamped with a pretty design like a flower or chinese character.
    On the night of the festival, my whole family gathers together and goes outside to admire the full moon. We eat mooncakes, drink tea, and I get to stay up way past my bedtime! Wh
enever I look at the full moon, it reminds me of spending quality time with my loved ones.
    Some other fun activities are carrying brightly-lit lanterns and watching folk dances performed by people in colorful costumes. It's a magical night full of lights, good food, and family.
    Qingming Festival
    The Qingming or Tomb Sweeping Festival is all about honoring our ancestors. My grandparents take me to visit the graves of our relatives and clean off any dirt, weeds or debris. We leave offerings of food, flowers, and burn incense and special papers as a sign of respect.
    Although it sounds kind of sad, it's actually a really nice way to remember those who came before us. My grandparents tell me stories about our family history while we're there. Afterwards, we have a big picnic with my cousins, aunts and uncles in the countryside. We fly kites, pick green vegetables, and just enjoy being outside in nature.
