摘要：PURPOSE:To accurately segment the character area of each character even when respective characters in a character string can not be segmented by respective rectangular areas due to their inclinations or shapes by segmenting respective character areas from the character string expressed by a binary image. CONSTITUTION:An image memory circuit 4 stores a picked-up character string image. The stored character pattern are inverted by an image inverting circuit 5 and the background part of the characters is extracted. The background part is converted into a linear image by a thinning circuit 6. The linear image consists of a part for forming closed parts surrounding respective characters and end points such as branch points or independent points surrounded by the characters. When the end points are removed by an end point removing circuit 7, the closed areas based upon the linear image are determined by a closed area determining circuit 8. A character segmenting circuit 9 applies the closed areas to the character pattern to segment respective characters.
